June’s It’s Still Too Early Oscar Predictions

The Oscar machine can’t stop, won’t stop. I have tried to fend it off but given that Cannes ended last month and I last updated my Oscar predictions in April, it was time to illuminate you all with some new Oscar predictions and analysis. So here you go. I ranked my Oscar predictions this time to make it more fun.

Thoughts

–Foxcatcher had such a great reception at Cannes and Bennett Miller took home the director’s prize. Since it’s the movie with the heat right now I have moved it into first place in several categories. However, it was very difficult to figure out thwere to place the actors, and that could spell trouble come Oscar time. Channing Tatum and Steve Carell got the lionsshare of the praise, but who is going lead? Will they campaign colead? In trios, it always seems like one man gets left out, which is why Tatum isn’t in the field just yet.

-Speaking of Cannes, Mike Leigh‘s Mr. Turner had a great showing, meaning him and Timothy Spall are now on the table for nominations, as well as the film. Xavier Dolan also had a rapturous reception with his film Mommy. I want to add him somewhere but his movie always have weird as hell release dates, will he be in competition?

-Furthering that, don’t you think we are due for a lone director type slot? Ever since we went to the sliding scale, the Academy often looks at the BP slot as the way to honor the film where the dirctor’s normally would. But the director’s branch has always been adventurous and they’ll have several auteur types to reward. My guess? It’ll be Jean-Marc Valee, who narrowly missed for Dallas Buyers Club last year.

-In blockbuster news, did y’all see that trailer for Interstellar? Man, it had me tearing up in the theater and the visuals looked pretty great. Could this land Christopher Nolan a Best Director nod or maybe even more?

-The summer blockbuster season has gotten off to an…interesting start. There are several films that could get nominations, but in totality the crop has been underwhelming. Maybe Edge of Tomorrow and the rest of the summer can pick up the slack?
