Penny Dreadful Recap: Episode 2.09 “And Hell Itself My Only Foe”

Read Time:8 Minute, 2 Second

Vanessa and Evelyn finally face off and prepare for battle, Sir Malcolm is going mad, Caliban gets himself into some trouble…while Lily and Dorian have some fun, and it’s another full moon so you know this doesn’t bode well for a certain someone.

Ethan (Josh Hartnett) is sleeping and wakes up startled to a gun being pointed at him by who else but Roper. He tells Ethan to call Vanessa (Eva Green) so she can join them and she walks down the stairs.  Roper uncovers the side of his face that he has been hiding showing the clawed scar marks he has and tells Vanessa that Ethan did this to him…he has some chains with him and tells Vanessa to put them on Ethan because he is coming back to the USA with him…she obliges and then in the process she slashes the back of his neck and all three start fighting. Vanessa grabs a knife and she stabs Roper and Ethan hits him on the head and she keeps stabbing Roper until he is dead. Vanessa and Ethan bury Roper and she mentions to Ethan that now both of them have committed homicide. She asks him if he did that to Roper’s face and he tells her yes and she wants to know what he is when just in the nick of time a carriage is approaching and it’s Victor (Harry Treadaway) telling them that Sir Malcolm is in trouble and they must leave immediately. Victor tells him what happened while heading back and tells him that Sir Malcolm was under some enchantment and that he is at the Witch’s place…as we see Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) being terrorized by this family telling him all these things.

Evelyn (Helen McCrory) is in her lair of horrible dolls when Hecate appears and tells her mother she looks tired and tells her daughter that she knows Vanessa is coming. Hecate tells her that she is enjoying seeing her mother’s terror if she’s being honest with her…because remember for a couple of episodes we’ve seen Hecate wanting to become Queen Bee and take over. She leaves Evelyn saying she has a social call to make, but that she will be back for the festivities that await them tonight.

The gang arrives home when Ethan and the rest spot Inspector Rusk and now he knows that Ethan has been living with Sir Malcolm…they take a walk and Rusk tells him that he knows something is going on here…something otherworldly…that him and the rest of them are like a phantom limb. Rusk tells Ethan know that he will keep watching and that he has other men watching the house and calls Ethan by his real last name which is Talbot and knows a couple of other facts that he’s dug out. Ethan goes back inside and tells Sembene (Danny Sapani) that there is another full moon tonight and if he will help him once again. Both then walk into Mr. Lyle (Simon Russell Beale) confessing his treachery to the gang (that he’s been working for Evelyn) and he is prepared to suffer the consequences. Vanessa is ready to go and help Sir Malcolm, but Ethan tells her he can’t help…she gets angry at Ethan but Sembene tells her they will go and save him tomorrow and kill Evelyn and everyone else that it will be an unholy slaughter.

Caliban (Rory Kinnear) is working on some wax figures when Mr. Putney and him have a chat about how true evil is above all things seductive and when a Siren calls you either save your soul or give it to her. Caliban the trouble this will get you in…but more of that later. Lily (Billie Piper) is at Dorian’s (Reeve Carney) and she tells him that he is very interesting man and he can’t be as pure as he looks. He mentions to her that he does photography sessions because he is intrigued with all manner of life. He calls her Brona (about time because we all knew Dorian knew it was her) and they kiss and she stops it and tells him to kneel to her and that in time he will tell her all his secrets.

Victor is drugging himself and is telling Vanessa that he has been staying here for the past few days…she tells him that she is sorry that Lily hurt him and she calls Victor a beautiful monster that he will one day find love and she kisses his forehead and tells him that his life awaits him (this show needs to stop with me shipping people…this scene was just lovely). Sembene tells Ethan that he needs to tell Vanessa what he is and tell her everything. Sembene tells him that he was feared and hated where he comes from because he was a slave trader and that is the reason for the marks on his face (finally some backstory) and that he found kindness among the unkind and Ethan tells him that he is proud to call Sembene his friend.

Ethan goes to his room and Hecate has been waiting for him and tells him that she wants to join him because he is the Wolf of God and that he has a profound destiny. That he has been given a great power and when he is ready that she will be there to serve him and kisses him and then turns into her Nightcomer form and leaves through the mirror. Vanessa is getting ready for her battle with Evelyn, she dresses while seeing the burned cross on her back and walks down the stairs and leaves.

Back to Caliban, he’s with Lavinia when she asks him if he knows what her father has been working on lately and that both of them should explore she calls him a true friend and he agrees…Caliban tells her he sees cells all in a row and he spots a book inside one of them and walks into it when Lavinia closes the cell door. Lily and Dorian are having sex and she wants to know how old he is and if he can die because she is choking him and let’s him go. She then bites his ear off and tells him that she wants to see his power and to heal himself and calls him her beloved immortal (man so much two timing Lily is playing these men like fiddles left and right).

Sembene tells the gang that Vanessa left, everyone is getting ready to leave when he tells Ethan that he can’t go because full moon tonight, but that is not stopping Ethan. We go back to the Putney’s and Lavinia tells Caliban about the plan her father had and Mr. Putney tells Caliban that this will be his new home now and will be put on display with the rest of the freaks and that people will pay to see them. Dorian walks over to Lily coming back from his secret room and his ear has been fully restored.

Vanessa arrives at Evelyn’s, she goes up the stairs where Evelyn is waiting for her and tells her that she needs to come with her. Hecate is there and tells her that she will prepare for the others when they arrive…she kisses Vanessa’s lips and tells her that she kissed Ethan and that she can still taste him. Vanessa wants to see Sir Malcolm, but Evelyn tells her not yet that first she needs to see someone else. The gang arrives and are preparing to go inside and the word of advice is to kill everyone they don’t recognize. Ethan and Sembene go through the back and he tells Sembene to make sure that he doesn’t hurt his friends. Victor and Lyle are walking inside the house and Victor has a look of shock seeing all the decoration in the house. The Nightcomers are in the walls and we can hear that Sir Malcolm is wailing in the distance. This whole scene is just very intense! Ethan and Sembene walk down the stairs when both doors close and both are trapped inside and Hecate is the one that locks them…this witch!

Victor and Mr. Lyle are getting closer to the sounds of Sir Malcolm and Victor opens the door and goes inside when another Nightcomer locks the door behind him and is after Mr. Lyle. Sir Malcolm continues groaning on the floor and sees Victor, but instead of Victor he sees Peter. And then Victor sees Caliban calling him father along with Lily and to my surprise Proteus!!! And tells him your children have returned.

And here is where my anxiety levels were raising because Ethan and Sembene are locked inside and remember full moon…he yells at Sembene that he can’t stop the transformation and Ethan wants to shoot himself, but Sembene stops him telling him he can’t do that…he was chosen by God…and tells him, “You are my friend Ethan Chandler” and I was like NOOOOOO!!!!

Vanessa has gone into the doll room, where she sees her doll and we see that the doll opens it’s eyes and is looking at Vanessa and calls her a murderer.

Ethan is turning and honestly I just couldn’t because I know exactly what was going to happen and he attacks Sembene bites his throat and kills him and I was like this can’t be happening *tears* and that’s it end of the episode…next week the season finale which looks intense can’t believe the season is almost over.
