Girls Recap Episode 5.01 “Wedding Day” (Season Premiere)
Terence Johnson February 21, 2016 ArticleAnd we are back! It feels like it has been ages since we last saw Girls. Where we last left off the girls were all heading toward different directions. Shosh was gonna go to Japan, something finally clicked with Jessa and made her realize that she wanted to help people out by becoming a therapist, Marnie became engaged to Desi, and Hannah as we saw 6 months later decided to take a chance with Fran and they totally looked happy together. And now here we are with the season premiere where finally it’s Marnie’s wedding day and some things don’t go according to plan, we see the birth of maybe a new relationship, but it’s complicated as you’ll see why and it’s finally great to see all the girls together again…so let’s jump right in.
We begin with Marnie (Allison Williams) looking out the window and preparations for her wedding are happening, everyone is mentioning that it seems like it’s going to rain and that of course freaks Marnie out (because well it’s Marnie). Jessa (Jemima Kirke) tells her that the rain is good because “they do wonderful things for fertility” while the girls are talking…Fran (Jake Lacy) has arrived and sits next to Hannah (Lena Dunham) and Marnie calls for Shosh and tells her that she needs to tell Fran he has to leave because he’s a guy and that Hannah is being completely inappropriate and unsupportive friend.
Hannah and Fran are walking out and she’s upset that he got kicked out because of “female reasons” so she takes him to where the guys are at…Ray (Alex Karpovsky) is sitting down…while Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Elijah (Andrew Rannells) are “transcending” aka doing some kind of meditation. Coming out of the bathroom, Adam (Adam Driver) walks out and it’s a pretty awkward encounter with Hannah and her new beau, she compliments his suit and leaves Fran with them. Adam and Fran have the most awkward conversation ever (such a great scene) while Ray just stares at their back and forth of incomplete sentences. Desi comes out and thanks all the guys for being there for him, but of course can’t remember Fran…while Ray just looks sad because he’s still not over Marnie.
Jessa is outside and Adam spots her and starts laughing because she has rollers in her hair, she tells him to shut up and tells him that she feels bad for Marnie because of the circus of friends that she has in her life. Jessa asks Adam if it’s weird seeing Hannah with Fran and he jokingly says who’s Fran, but he tells Jessa that he’s a nice person and he’s not bothered by Hannah’s new relationship…he mentions to her that he’s evolved and is happy for her. Suddenly Adam kisses Jessa and she tells him they can’t do this, but she kisses him back…both come back for air and Adam tells her that he will see her as he leaves you hear thunder and yep it’s about to rain.
Fran is with Ray and straight out Ray asks him what are his intentions with Hannah…he wants to know if she means something to him or is it all about sex because he sees Hannah as his younger sister and doesn’t want to see her spirit get sucked out. All this talk goes back to Marnie and Ray telling Fran that the love of his life is marrying someone else and that he doesn’t have the guts to pull a Graduate, because he knows that he is not the person she wants. Desi walks in freaking out that he can’t do this and how this has already happened seven times before, which shocks both Ray and Fran.
The girls are getting their hair and make-up done and they want to do something with Hannah’s hair, but she starts to get annoyed and walks out. We see her and Fran doing the horizontal mambo in his car and Hannah is telling him how this whole wedding is like a bad rom-com movie and Fran in confidence tells her about Desi and how this is his eighth engagement, which of course Hannah now wants to tell Marnie. It starts pouring outside and Desi is running towards the pond and Ray follows him screaming that he doesn’t deserve Marnie and that he is garbage (can’t argue with that) but leave it to Ray to convince him that love is about sacrifice and basically to man up and it works.
Marnie is putting on her wedding dress and all ready when Hannah walks in and is shocked with the amount of makeup she has because truly the make-up artist made her look like a clown. They have a heart to heart talk where Hannah mentions she is scared because everything is about to change. Marnie asks if this is a mistake marrying Desi, but Hannah tells her no and they hug. Leave it to Jessa to come to the rescue and fix everything with Marnie’s make up and hair along with the other girls as well. Finally it has stopped raining and all four girls head outside…Hannah stays behind and Shosh calls out to her saying if she’s coming and proceeds to head that way.
And that’s it folks until next week.
