Girls Episode 6.04 Recap “Painful Evacuation”

There is a big reveal this week on Girls, where Hannah receives some surprising news. That will set things in motion for the remainder of the season.

Hannah (Lena Dunham) is at the home of writer, Ode Montgomery (guest star Tracey Ullman) where she is interviewing her. Ode mentions that not having a child is the natural state of the female writer. She tells Hannah to write that quote down and that it’s something that Hannah needs to get accustomed to.

Adam (Adam Driver) is filming a scene for the movie he is starring in. The director yells cut and tells him that she feels no emotions coming from him. Adam tells her that he doesn’t understand why his character is talking so much and that he could do better if he had no lines. Both start arguing and Adam is just done and walks out on the movie.

Ray (Alex Karpovsky) and Marnie (Allison Williams) are going at it and honestly it feels like she has no emotion or feelings with what is currently happening, it almost seems like she’s truly just acting to pleasure Ray. After finishing up, Ray wants to know why they can’t have dinner sometime and how she’s always doing something. Marnie tells him that she would love to have dinner, but she can’t tonight. Marnie just keeps talking about herself and if she should take an Uber, while Ray just zones out feeling disappointed.

Hannah and Elijah (Andrew Rannells) are in the bathroom together and while she’s using the toilet she tells Elijah that it’s hurting to pee and that she thinks she has a UTI. Elijah asks Hannah that if she can call her friend, because he wants an invite to this party.

Over at Ray’s coffee shop one of his regular customer’s is holding up the line telling Ray some story. Ray cuts him off and as he walks out Ray sees him falling down. Ray storms out worried.

Marnie is with Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) at couples therapy, she tells him that they need to get back to work and Desi just can’t believe Marnie just said that when he is in recovery and calls her his worst enabler. Desi continues telling Marnie how he loved her and that she never saw him as a human being. This scene I just couldn’t deal with it, because I just cannot stand the toxicity of these two characters and how they bring the worst in each other. The only saving grace of this scene was Hamilton’s Okieriete Onaodowan as the therapist. Marnie cannot believe how Desi can say these awful things about her and then she starts talking about herself…once again making it about her. The therapist tells Marnie that she is being a narcissist.

Jessa (Jemima Kirke) is watching a video on child sociopaths. Adam walks in angry after quitting the movie. She mentions to Adam that she thinks she was a child sociopath and how she outgrew it. Adam tells her about quitting the movie and tells Jessa that he can’t be waiting around anymore to be someone’s tool. Jessa tells Adam that he needs to make his own film and proceeds to look it up on the internet.

In light of what happened (the customer died) Ray has closed shop for the rest of the day. He tells Hermie (Colin Quinn) how he feels bad about what happened to his customer. Hermie tells Ray that he’s always known him to be smart, but that lately his priorities are cuckoo bananas. Hermie tells Ray how he is just coasting along lately and wasting all this potential.

Concerned about how much she’s hurting, Hannah calls her mom and tells her she has blood in her pee again and proceeds to show her through FaceTime and her mom tells Hannah she needs to go to the ER.

On a high of this new film idea, Jessa mentions to Adam that they need to make a film about themselves and Hannah at first Adam is not on board with it. But Jessa tells him that maybe this movie can finally help them move forward with their lives. Adam finally comes on board with the pitch saying how this idea for the film is everything about human nature.

At the ER, Hannah awaits for her results and in walks her doctor and it’s Joshua (guest star Patrick Wilson). Both shocked at seeing each other again after their last encounter. Hannah already knows she has a UTI and Joshua tells her she does have an infection, but also reveals that she’s pregnant. Joshua asks if she knows who the father is and of course it’s surf instructor Paul-Louis. Joshua mentions that an abortion is an out of pocket expense, upset Hannah walks out.

Ray is at Shosh’s (Zosia Mamet) venting about what happened between him and Hermie. How he thinks that Hermie thinks bad about him, but Shosh tells Ray that maybe the reason Hermie said those things was maybe that he does not want Ray ending up the same as him. Ray agrees and tells Shosh that he’s going to Hermie’s place to apologize to him.

Adam and Jessa have been waiting for Hannah to come home. When Hannah sees them her face says it all…these are the last two people she least wants to see. They tell Hannah they are there to discuss a new creative project with her and tell her about the movie and how she needs to just sign a waiver for her permission. Hannah calmly tells both of them okay and Adam and Jessa are taken aback with her reaction.

Hannah walks into her apartment and sees Elijah on the couch. She asks about the party and what happened…Elijah tells Hannah how it was just a bunch of old gay people and it just wasn’t his scene. Hannah sits down on the couch and Elijah notices that something is wrong after her visit to the ER and tells Hannah to come and put her head in his lap. She does and Elijah begins rubbing Hannah’s head consoling her, while she looks somber and closes her eyes.

Ray arrives at Hermie’s place, he knocks at the door but there is no answer. Ray having a key to the place opens the doors and calls out Hermie’s name, but nothing. Finally Ray sees Hermie laying down on the couch trying to wake him up but he is unresponsive. Ray starts yelling at Hermie to wake up, but he’s dead. Ray is just lost and cannot believe what has happened.
