In the penultimate episode of Girls, Hannah is at odds with herself…should she stay in New York or leave as new a opportunity presents itself. While we find out something surprising about Shosh and her new life.
Hannah (Lena Dunham) is at a campus and she overhears a group of friends talking about sex and relationships she tells them to nurture their friendship and to not sleep on it (this coming from experience) the group of people are just like who is this person…they think she’s someone’s mom or that she’s going back to college. So, the reason Hannah is here because she has a job interview and apparently it’s a teaching position? Like how is that possible? The head of the department tells Hannah that she heard about her from the Internet. She liked how Hannah is honest and frank and wants to offer her a position to teach students. I still don’t know how that is possible, but okay.
On the train heading back home, Hannah receives a call from Phaedra and tells her she got the job(that was quick). Hannah a bit shocked tells her she needs 24 hours to think about it before accepting.
Back at the apartment, Elijah (Andrew Rannells) can’t believe that Hannah is considering moving away from the city. She mentions to him that New York hasn’t brought her anything than misery and that it’s too hard to make a living here. Elijah tells her how when they first got this apartment they agreed to live there and suffer together and tells Hannah that she can’t give up on that. Elijah then tells Hannah not to expect him to move in with her…get married and for him to be her Tad, because she is sorely mistaken (probably). Both of them not being able to sleep…Hannah calls out to Elijah if wants to come sleep with her… he says no and then she asks him if he can sing to her. He does and it’s just such a tender scene between them.
The next day, Hannah is telling her dad (Peter Scolari) and David about the move upstate she’s considering. Tad thinks it’s a great idea and that it’s something she should do. Hannah is trying to reach Marnie, but she’s not answering her phone. Hannah spots this new age type shop and goes in and overhears these two girls that have just moved to the city and are moving in together. It makes Hannah smile…sparking memories of her once. She then calls Shosh, but her phone has been disconnected. Hannah is now with Elijah and she mentions to him how this whole goodbye tour is confusing. He tells Hannah how she’s made so many wonderful friendships here and both start cracking up (can I say just how much I love their friendship).
Back on the train, Hannah sees that this guy from across is flirting with her. He mouths off to get off at the next stop, but when he goes near Hannah, he notices the pregnant belly and his look completely changes. Leaving Hannah disappointed. Heading to her apartment, Hannah sees that Caroline (Gaby Hoffman) is with Sample on the stairs. Hannah is surprised that she’s back and Caroline tells her that with the right cocktail of pills…it’s stabilized her (for now) and what cured her was moving away from the city. Hannah just walks away and calls Marnie again and Marnie (Allison Williams) looks at her phone, but doesn’t pick up the call. On the train, Hannah seems to have made her decision about moving.
Hannah goes to Shosh’s place and Shosh (Zosia Mamet) is surprised to see her there. Hannah notices the party going on and tells Shosh how she picked a bad time and she agrees with Hannah. Shosh is kinda peeved at Hannah for neglecting to tell her about the baby and how that’s who they are to each other now. She tells Hannah how she needs to get back to her engagement party (say what?) when did this happen? Marnie is at the party and Hannah can’t believe it since she didn’t pick up her phone all day. Marnie tells Hannah that Shosh met Byron (her fiancé) at a Sprinkles vending machine for cupcakes (okay). Elijah is at the party too and Hannah is like you too and he says yes that him and Shosh are bros. And here comes Jessa (Jemima Kirke) and Hannah doesn’t even want to deal with her now.
Marnie calls for a group meeting in the bathroom with all of them and of course none of them want to be there. Marnie mentions how they are all adult women and that her online therapist told her they have to say what they feel. Hannah goes first saying she is feeling shitty, because she wasn’t invited to the party. Jessa goes next and says that she’s tired she can’t go to one place without being called a Jezebel or a witch (particularly by Hannah). Marnie tells them that she is feeling a lot of anxiety, because they allowed their friendship to reach a place of aggression and isolation. Shosh wants to take a step back and tells the group that the reason they cannot hang out together anymore…is that they cannot be in a same room together without making it completely and entirely about themselves. Shosh pulls herself from the equation and says that she now has a new life she needs to attend to and walks away. Hannah mentions to everyone she is moving upstate. Elijah opens the door and yells that he got the part for “White Men Can’t Jump” all happy. Marnie says that Shosh is right and tells everyone to get out, because she needs the room.
Jessa, tries to make Hannah feel a bit better telling her how she barely got invited to the party too. Hannah tells her she’s fine and asks Jessa about school. She tells Hannah how she quit, because it turns out she wasn’t ready to help people the way she thought. How she took a hard look in the mirror…Hannah asks what Jessa saw and she tells Hannah she saw a f—ing bitch and both start laughing. Jessa gives Hannah a gift she got for the baby…it’s a dress. Hannah tells her it’s gonna be a boy and that Jessa is the first person she’s told. Hannah asks what is she supposed to do with a boy. But Jessa tells her that he is going to be perfect. Hannah thanks her and Jessa apologizes to Hannah. This was such an emotional scene between these two after everything that has happened. Hannah tells her it’s okay and finally there’s some relief for these two.
The last scene was wonderful. We get to see all the girls dancing, while Hannah looks at each one of them and just smiles. Then we see that Hannah has moved upstate…she’s at her new place ready to begin this new chapter in her life.
