The Emmy FYC window ended yesterday and after taking stock of the television season, I can say that this year was truly wild. TV has never been more diverse and we have never had as many shows as we have had in any point in the history of television. In the past TV season, I watched 65 TV movies and series…chile, where did I find time to do anything else? Anyways, it’s fun to look back on the season and see what resonated with me. Some quick thoughts on each category before getting into the winners.
Movie/Miniseries
-Manhunt: Unabom, like MARS last year, represents a nontraditional cable network diving into drama and knocking it out of the park. I was so enraptured by this series and Sam Worthington’s acting in it that I was almost convinced I’ve been to hard on him (I haven’t, but I was almost convinced).
Comedy
-It was a tough battle for the top Comedy spot, something I never thought I’d say given my aversion to comedies for the most part. It came down to a three way race between Barry (the scintilating freshman series), Schitt’s Creek (gut busting laughs and heart), and Santa Clarita Diet, which had the biggest improvement between two seasons of any show I have EVER seen.
Drama
-Drama is always the category that fluctuates the most because we just get so many of them and only one show from last year, The Crown, repeated as a nominee. What I found really fascinating was that every show was thrillingly acted and it was a STRUGGLE to narrow them down. Best Actress truly was a killer. But I loved being able to have an eclectic group.
