The Good, Bad, and Ugly: 2018 Oscar Nominations Edition
Terence Johnson January 22, 2019 ArticleAh Oscar nominations morning when everyone is happymadangryresolved all at once. This morning the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences released their list of what they consider the best in film for 2018. It was a varied list with some stuff I was expecting and some stuff I was not. So let’s parse through the Oscar nominations, shall we?
The Good
Black Panther getting nominated in several categories, including Best Picture. The first superhero movie to ever be nominated in this category! I hope it wins Production Design and Costumes.
Spike Lee is finally a Best Director nominee and also got his film into Best Picture.
The surprises: Yalitzia and Marina from Roma getting acting nods was great, as was the documentary film category, which has a mix of hits and critical darlings.
These nominations are about what I would expect given the way the awards season has gone.
The Bad
Three Identical Strangers missing documentary is a mess.
Is this now the second Spike Lee film with some semblance of a campaign towards Best Picture where it got one acting nomination…for the white guy?
What in the hell is Cold War doing amongst these Oscar nominations? That movie is not good.
The Ugly
Burning missing out on Foreign Language film is the only real miss I’m bummed about. I think very highly of the film so it’s too bad the Academy didn’t nominate it.
Yall have been so loud annoying vigilant about Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody that you let Vice in without the proper dragging it deserved.
Anyways, here is the full list of the Oscar nominations for you to peruse. I’d say that Roma is your frontrunner, with The Favourite and BlacKkKlansman right behind it.
