While every fast food company was beefing about their chicken sandwiches, two streaming services were starting their own war. Apple debuted the first trailer for The Morning Show, its first show that will launch its streaming network. Netflix debuted its own first, the first trailer for The Politician, created by Ryan Murphy. Both provided me with some interesting things to ponder so let’s digest.

The Policitian

Oh this looks like some prime rich, white mess so you already know I will be present and accounted for.

This is Ryan Murphy’s first Netflix show and I am both excited and scared. Will being loosed from the shackles on a traditional network help elevate his work or indulge his worst instincts. I could easily see this coming out the gate with a bang and then falling apart three episodes from the finale.

Ben Platt has always given me stuck up, come from money white gay (even though I hear he’s very nice) and it looks like he’s putting that to good use. I hope he gets to be the messy coniving queen he deserves to be!

Ryan Murphy has a type.

Jessica Lange is always a delight and Dlyan McDermot is in this so I’m going to call this show American Horror Story: Rich White High School.

There’s a strong hint about a bigger mystery/violence in store. It’s being called a comedy but maybe it swings more drama?

The Morning Show

So is this based on the life of Matt Lauer and The Today Show? We don’t get a hint at what exactly Steve Carrell’s character did to get fired but we have to assume its pretty bad/scandalous given how he reacts. I don’t think that by casting

Which brings me to my biggest issue which is the levels of casting. It would be interesting if you swapped Billy Crudup (so good in this trailer as a lowkey smarmy guy) with Carrell, and maybe Gugu and Reese. This is Apple’s first show so they needed the meggawatt talent, but it’s not gelling for me so far.

I get that anyone of any age can be drafted into being a cable news person but I am truly LOL’ing at Reese (43) playing the young upstart whom Jennifer Anniston (50) believes is potentially gunning for her job.

The Newsroom wasn’t a perfect show, but it was super riveting. I am not really compelled by The Morning Show

Both of these shows feel very white, but I am the least intrigued by the content here.
