The Emmy nominations were announced today and naturally there was a lot to talk about. Netflix led the field with a whopping 160 nominations. Here are my key takeaways from the Emmy nomtinations.

The Good
Black women are all up and through the acting nominations. There’s at least one Black woman nominated in every acting race which is amazing.

Watchmen lead the field with 26 nominations. It was the best thing to air on television this past year and as such deserves. Very happy to see Jovan Adepo in Supporting Actor.

Lynn Shelton and Fred Willard get posthumous nominations.

Speaking of Lynn, there’s a good number of women nominated for directing. This diversity thing is slow going with Hollywood, so it’s nice to see that work is being appreciated.

We got a few big surprises including What We Do in the Shadows and The Mandalorian in Comedy and Drama series respectively. Also LOVED seeing Paul Mescal and Jeremy Pope in Limited Series Actor.

Schitts Creek getting 15 nominations including all the principle actors of the Schitt family.

The Bad
As nice as it is to call them Emmy nominated actors, Dan Levy and Annie Murphy should be in Lead. That supporting campaign is disingenuous.

When you pick out the good nominations, it seems like the Emmys nominated a bunch of stuff. Doing a deeper dive though and it feels like the same shows got noms everywhere. I guess when you really like something like Stranger Things you’ll nominate it forever.

This isn’t bad per say but Reese Witherspoon must be smarting after acting in three major projects and not getting nominated for any of them.

The Ugly
I don’t see too much ugly here, other than this foolish sliding scale of nominees from 5-8. Let’s circle back around to this once I get through all 61 pages of the Emmy nomination list.
