The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly: 93rd Oscar Nominations
Terence Johnson March 15, 2021 ArticleChile, the Academy will always zig when you expect them to zag. The Oscar nominations for this hybrid 2020/2021 year were announced today and they are full of little idiosyncrasies that show the Academy as one of the more fascinating voting bodies. Naturally there’s lots to talk about so lets dig in.
The Good
Nine of the 20 acting nominations go to people of color including 3 for actors of Asian descent. That is an amazing feat considering how the Academy has treated Asian actors in the past.
As I mentioned above, this year the Oscar nominations list is so funky: The Father and Judas and the Black Messiah doing extremely well, Thomas Vinterberg being a lone director, Greyhound getting nominated in Best Sound.
For the first time ever, we get a lineup of directors that’s not majority white men!
The Bad
It’s so strange to me that Another Round got a lone director nomination and it’s star Mads Mikkelson couldn’t crack the actor lineup.
Has there been a movie with the least amount fan fare to lead the nominations like Mank? I had a feeling it would do well, but it leads the field with 10.
It’s a miracle Paul Raci made it into Supporting Actor given the crazy amount of category fraud. Stanfield and Kaluuya are CO-LEADS of their film as is Leslie Odom Jr. I get that folks don’t quite know what to do with ensemble movies and people want to win Oscars but my goodness, I want the stars of today to have some pride.
The Ugly
Welcome to Chechnya should have made the VFX field.
Ma Rainey got so many important nominations and not making Picture is wild.
