The Emmys will always zig when you expect them to zag. The voters in that Academy don’t seem to have quite as discerning taste as yours truly, but they unveiled their nominations today. Succession led the way with 25 nominations including Best Drama, Ted Lasso led all comedies with 20 and White Lotus led miniseries with 20 nominations. Lets dig in a bit

The Good
It’s a nice day to be rooting for everybody Black. Tons of Black people got nominations, but I think I’m most happy for the Abbott Elementary crew. Quinta, Tyler, Sheryl, and Janelle did some good work on that show.

Melanie Lynsky getting nominated is very cool.

Corn Puddin being the song nominated from Schmigadoon is both hilarious and perfect.

The Bad
The Other Two not being nominated for major comedy awards is a travesty, especially now that it’s got the HBO Max machine behind it!

The Ugly
It’s time for the Emmys to have a come to [insert diety] moment with regards to how many nominations a show can receive in a particular category. There is more TV being made now than ever before and I could argue that the nominations have gotten more narrow and worse than when we had less to choose from. 5 Supporting actress nominations for White Lotus is objectively crazy. I decided to look up Angels in America’s Emmy noms and they only got 4 supporting actor noms the year they swept the Emmys! Succession and Ted Lasso are also clogging up space. This is not to say those are not good shows, but they need to institute a percentage rule or a max on how many nominations a show can get cause this is getting very boring. 2-3 max nominees in a category per show. Also, no more of this “we’re an ensemble, we’re all going supporting.” No, all of yall are lead actors and need to compete as such.
