The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: 2025 Oscar Nominations

After a delay due to the massive LA wildfires, the Academy announced their nominations for the upcoming Oscar ceremony. As per usual, there was some good and some not so good nominations. My fake Oscar ballot and top 10 movies will becoming later in the month/early Feb but let’s do a quick forensic dive into today’s nominations shall we?

The Good

  • It seems like, for at least one year, they have given up their aversion to actors in horror films with Demi Moore getting her first Oscar nomination. Not only that, but the zeitgeist hit The Substance landed major noms in Picture, Director, and Screenplay.
  • We’ve got a real Best Actress race with every single nominee being in a movie that made the Best Picture lineup.
  • Speaking of actors, we’ve got 13 first time nominees in the lineup including the first openly trans nominee.
  • Documentary Feature is a banger of a lineup.
  • Nice to see Nosferatu pick up some tech noms.
  • I guess the key to getting nominated in Visual Effects is to use CGI to turn people into apes…

The Bad

  • Clarence Maclin missing Supporting Actor is a tough pill to swallow considering that lineup and the general success the movie had.
  • What is Wicked doing in Original Score? Not enough of the music that is not already written by Stephen is impactful enough to have it take up a spot that could have gone to Challengers.
  • These movies had no shot just given their stature but I would have loved to see Joan Chen in Supporting Actress and Hundreds of Beavers in Song and VFX.

The Ugly

  • Category fraud – Zoe, Kieran, and Ariana should have competed in lead and we continue to erode the understanding of these categories and movie history just so that co-stars can have easier paths to nominations. All of these performances were strong enough to make the lead lineups!
  • I knew the Academy would not vibe with Queer but I am shook Daniel Craig missed out on Best Actor in favor of Sebastian Stan in The Apprentice.
  • This is a general note but outside of like 1-2 surprises these nominations feel…kinda boring. And that’s with some of my fave movies in the mix! 2024 was such an interesting movie year and every nom here feels kinda basic from what we’d expect.
