The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: Oscar Nominations

Well, the Oscar nominations were announced this morning, with The Shape of Water leading with 13 nominations. Let’s just dig right on in with some analysis!
The Good
Honestly, for the first time in eons, there really isn’t anything to complain about with these Oscar nominations. Most of the people who bitch about this year’s lineup probably have personal gripes, but if you followed the season, you knew what was and wasn’t getting nominated. There was so much to be pleasantly surprised about and this lineup is super varied and interesting. Way to go AMPAS!
The directing lineup is AMAZING. PTA, Gerwig, Nolan, del Toro, and Peele. Wow. I don’t even like Dunkirk but Nolan guided that spectacle to the screen and deserves praise.
Congrats to Rachel Morrison for becoming the first woman ever nominated for Best Cinematography, Jordan Peele for being the first African-American nominated in 3 categories, and Greta as the 5th woman to be nommed in Best Director.
I love all the Phantom Thread love, but I screamed with joy seeing Lesley Maville nominated in Supporting Actress. She’s absolutely brilliant.
Even though I didn’t care for some of these films, I do like when the Academy acknowledges good elements of movies in tech categories, such as Baby Driver in editing, Logan in Adapted Screenplay, Wonder in Makeup, and Blade Runner 2049 in VFX and Cinematography.
I hope the fact that Christopher Plummer got in encourages all of Hollywood to really consider how it approaches cases of sexual assault and abuse, and stop working with people who contribute to that. Ridley reshot this movie a month before it was supposed to come out and got the actor and Oscar nomination. Yall hoes have no excuse!
