The Good, the Bad, the Ugly: 2019 Golden Globes Nominations
Terence Johnson December 6, 2018 ArticleWow awards season really just came up and slapped us upside our heads, didn’t it? The Golden Globes announced their nominations today and dear reader, I would not have known if not for everyone tweeting about it. No matter, I still have some thoughts on the Golden Globes nominations.
The Good
Spreading the love. Unlike other groups, it seems the HFPA actually watched a ton of movies! The nominations slate is pretty spreadout and for once I don’t have much to complain about. They picked movies I love (Crazy Rich Asians, Black Panther), movies people seem to hate (Green Book), and movies that seemed to be fading (like First Man).
I am so glad to see Billy Porter, Hugh Grant, Ben Whishaw, Daniel Bruhl, and Richard Madden get nominated on the TV side. And Constance Wu in Musical/Comedy actress!
The Bad
I know that the Golden Globes go their own way (which I am grateful for during awards season) but it is truly silly that the TV categories only have one returning series apiece, albeit a great one in The Americans and the beloved The Good Place. Did every other returning show suck?
Vice getting 6 nominations to lead the field. This is gonna be The Big Short all over again and you all will realize how foolish Adam McKay movies are in due time.
The Ugly
Justin Hurwitz’ score for First Man is dreadful and that it was nominated here is foolish.
Category fraud is always an issue, but this year is turning out to be especially egregious with The Favourite and Beautiful Boy the biggest offenders. If you are the titular character you are probably the lead. If you are billed over the title, you are probably the lead. If you are a lead character with narrative weight and integral to how the story is told, you are the lead.
PRESS RELEASE
The 76th Golden Globes will take place at International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton on January 6th, 2019.
