The Good, Bad, and Ugly: 94th Oscar Nominations

Just when you expect the Academy to zig, they zag. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced their 94th Oscar nominations today and it’s certainly a bag. One of the things I’ve enjoyed since divesting from covering the race so intensely is you get to wake up whenever you feel like it and get surprised. So let’s dig into the Oscar nominations shall we?
The Good
– Though some of the noms were expected, this is a really fresh mix of nominees.
– The Power of the Dog leading with 12 nominations is amazing and it’s certainly the front runner to win.
– The changing membership has really added some interesting wrinkles like Drive My Car, The Worst Person in the World, and The Lost Daughter making huge late season pushes and landing major nominations.
– Denzel v Will v Andrew v Benedict in actor is fun!
– Kristen Stewart getting her first nomination for Spencer, finally getting over the hump to prime respect in this country to go alongside the success she’s found internationally awardswise.
– Flee becoming the first film to be nominated for Animated, International, and Documentary Feature in the same year.
The Bad
– Denis Villenueve not making the director 5 is tough, especially considering how much they loved the movie.
– Being the Ricardos getting three acting nominations, but also kind of funny it wasn’t Best Picture nominated.
The Ugly
– No Ruth Negga or Tessa Thompson in the acting lineup. Alongside A Hero in International Film, it feels like the prospects of those went by the wayside as sacrifices to get The Lost Daughter and Drive My Car in so many places.
– How do you watch and like West Side Story and not make room for the best performance in the movie, Mike Faist?
– The wrong pair of actors was nominated for Belfast.
– Also nominated for the wrong stuff, Licorice Pizza. Alana Haim should have been the sole nominee from that film.
