Girls Recap: Episode 3.09 “Flo”

Girls start off with Hannah’s mom, Loreen (Becky Ann Baker) and she’s on the phone with Hannah (Lena Dunham) telling her that her grandma is in the hospital and is going to die, that she has pneumonia and that Hannah has to go see her before she dies and tells her mom that she’s coming.
Adam (Adam Driver) is telling Hannah that he is very sorry that he can’t go to visit with her to see her Grandma, since he’s in the middle of his reheresal for his Broadway debut and she tells Adam that she completely understands and to not worry about it. Hannah starts talking about her grandma and how she used to cut out the Cathy cartoons and send them to her every Friday. Both of them are comparing their grandmothers and then Adam tells Hannah that he’s going to miss her even if it’s for only one night.
Hannah arrives to the hospital, where she runs into her Aunt Margo (Deidre Lovejoy) and tells Hannah to be prepared when she sees her grandma because she looks terrible and also to not cry. Hannah goes into the room and sees Grandma Flo (June Squibb) and she’s looking well. In walks in another of the sisters her Aunt Sissy (Amy Morton) along with Hannah’s mom there is some small talk, but pretty soon all sisters are arguing. Loreen is looking sad seeing her mother in the hospital bed and one of Hannah’s aunts tell her to get her mom something to eat.
While getting something to eat outside, Loreen tells Hannah that her grandma and her had a strained relationship and that she fears that she won’t get the chance to resolves these issues now that Grandma Flo is dying. She tells Hannah that she wants her to do a favor for her and it’s to tell Grandma Flo that her and Adam are engaged. Hannah is shocked and can’t believe that her mother is asking her this.
Hannah and her mom along with the rest of her aunts go to Grandma Flo’s house, where we see her cousin Rebecca (Sarah Steele), and asks how her grandma is and that the reason she didn’t go visit was because she wanted to remember her grandma the way she used to be. They have a bit of small talk and clearly you can see that things are going sour between the two cousins and in the end Rebecca invites Hannah for a drink.
Next up we see all three sisters talking about their mother and what is going to happen after she passes, Aunt Margo mentions the engagement ring that is Grandma Flo’s and she wants to keep it for Rebecca. So this turns into an argument because Loreen thinks that the engagement ring should belong to Hannah.
Hannah calls Adam to tell him about what her mom wanted her to say to Grandma Flo about being engaged. They kinda a discuss marriage and says that if he wants to get married one day and we see that Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) tells Adam that they have to go back to reheresal. Hannah tells Adam that they should forget they talked about this marriage thing. Adam tells her that he is committed to her at this time, where she gets mad at him for saying that she doesn’t want to have this conversation anymore and hangs up on him.
Hannah and Rebecca are now at the bar and Hannah is drinking and asks her cousin if she going to drink anything and tells Hannah that she doesn’t drink on weekdays. And she tells Hannah that the only reason she decided on going to a bar was because she thought a person like Hannah would go to a place like that, also Rebecca starts mentioning that writers are awful people and Hannah getting annoyed and trades insults back and before where Rebecca tells Hannah that Grandma Flo called her “loose” As they are driving back Rebecca is texting her mother and Hannah is telling her that she needs to look on the road and not text and drive and is not paying attention and crashes into a parked car. Both are at the hospital now and have been treated for their minor injuries when Adam comes rushing in the hospital worried about Hannah and she tells him how he arrived so fast and tells her that he borrowed Desi’s bike. Also Adam gets mad at Hannah and tells her that to don’t ever text him “Car crash” because it scared the crap out of him and then kisses Hannah. All sisters arrive after Adam and are relieved to see that Hannah and Rebecca are okay. Then Aunt Sissy proceeds to tell everyone that her mother said that if ever something bad happens to her to not put her on life support and a huge argument erupts between all three sisters. The nurse tells them to quiet down and both of Hannah’s aunts leave and then Loreen apologizes to Adam telling him that she’s sorry that he had to see them fighting but Adam tells her that it’s okay that “It’s like enchilada night at his parents house” (Freaking Adam Driver continues to kill it)
Hannah walks with Adam into her grandma’s room and wakes her up so she can meet Adam. Grandma Flo tells her that she doesn’t want to talk to strangers, but Hannah tells her that she and Adam are getting married next year. After they leave the room Loreen thanks them both for saying that they are going to get married and Adam tells Hannah that he has to go back for his reheresal. After Adam leaves…Hannah jokes with her mom that I guess if Grandma Flo doesn’t die that her and Adam have to get married…they both laugh but then Loreen tells Hannah that she deserves something better that she should keep the job, but not the guy and to be open for possibilities. This clearly doesn’t settle well with Hannah and tells her mom she knows nothing, but her mom tells her that it is not easy being married to an odd man.
Everyone is waiting at the hospital and we get a quick montage of them waiting around and then it’s morning and Hannah wakes up and heads to her grandma’s room where her mom and aunts are with the nurse saying that Grandma Flo has beat the pneumonia and everyone is happy. Hannah is felt alone with her grandma and she tells Hannah that she doesn’t look fine and Hannah tells her she is and they have a tender moment with just the two of them.
Hannah is heading back to the city when she receives a call from Rebecca and tells her that Grandma Flo is dead that she had a heart attack and that she needs to come back, Hannah just stands there with the crowd surrounding her.
