Penny Dreadful Recap: Episode 2.04 “Evil Spirits in Heavenly Places”
Liz Ponce May 24, 2015 ArticleThe gang continues trying to figure out what all these relics from Brother Gregory’s writings mean in hopes of seeing what the Devil wants with Vanessa, while also giving us a bit of humor in this episode with Ms. Ives and Dr. Frankenstein…Dorian is off doing his own thing…and Ethan is weary of a certain someone he finally meets in dire circumstances, so let’s delve into this week’s episode.
We start off with Vanessa (Eva Green) telling the gang the story of what happened with her friend the Cut-Wife. And tells them everything of the tragedy and end result. Victor (Harry Treadaway) is skeptical of everything that is happening while Vanessa mentions that these types of things regarding their new enemy are very real saying they are servants to the devil. Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) mentions that now this threat has a name and also they have a language that they need to decipher. Mr. Lyle mentions that all these relics are a puzzle, that it is collection of different languages forming new patterns; a story that continues the narrative…language to language. That it is an autobiography-the memoirs of the devil. Victor is leaving but he has a favor to ask of Vanessa…he asks if tomorrow she can accompany him on an errand and she accepts…Sembene (Danny Sapani) is sitting on the stairs and mentions to Vanessa that he is always watching (I really want to know about his past) across on the outside we see Hecate watching them.
The detectives that are in search of the Mariner’s Inn Massacre killer are at the crime scene of the train where the couple that was murdered by Hecate two episodes ago. One of them thinks this is the killer, but then realizes that the type of killing is different and they will find their answer through magic (I was like huh?) because it’s a pattern that the killer is elsewhere. Back at Putney’s Waxworks…Mr. Putney is showing his wife a blueprint of what they will do that will get them money and business, “Horror in all it’s horror” his plans are to keep freaks in a cellar. Lavinia (Putney’s daughter) comes downstairs where Caliban (Rory Kinnear) is working she knows he is there and converse about how it’s all about the eyes that will make the wax figure work. She wants to know Caliban’s eye color and he mentions that his eyes are not beautiful but tells her they are yellow. Lavinia tells him that it hurts to create the new wax crime figures because of the subject matter while Caliban tells her, “Born fresh to suffer” but that now he isn’t so sure of that statement. Lavinia tells him that there is hope for him yet and to not give up on life.
Ethan (Josh Hartnett) sees the Putney’s new sign for their coming attraction of the Mariner’s Inn Massacre and stops…then he sees the newspaper headlines all over about a family murder and a baby missing he buys the newspaper and kinda seems perturbed about it. Hecate and her witch sisters having been following him gives them the signal and one of the witches prick’s a horse and the horse goes crazy running as Hecate is about to across the street when the horse is almost going to trample her and Ethan runs and saves her…she starts crying (Don’t fall for those crocodile tears Ethan!). Again the detectives are with Mr. Roper (the hospital patient that survived that attack at the Mariner’s Inn) they want to know if he remembers anything and he tells them if doesn’t and that angers the main detective because he feels that he knows exactly who is the person that did this (and he does because Mr. Roper is American…he’s one of the bounty hunters after Ethan last season).
Victor and Vanessa arrive at the place he wanted her to accompany him and she is completely shocked that it’s at a dress shop. This whole scene between these two was just great. I love when this show throws us scenes like this on the show…sometimes we need a little bit of humor. Victor mentions that his “cousin” is coming to visit and that he needs to get her a few things. Victor is so nervous to be here and I am here for this…Vanessa holds up a white dress and Victor mentions that he has never seen her wear white and she’s tells him it’s not her color. He invites her to have tea with him and his cousin once she arrives and she agrees. Vanessa tells Victor that once they buy the dress they will also need to purchase some undergarments while she holds a silk lingerie top and wow the nervous laugh and shyness of Victor was great!
Ethan and Hecate are having a laugh at this restaurant, she tells him that she is from the USA and has been traveling to different parts of the States by herself because she is trying to be a liberated woman. She sees some Latin books that he has on the table and asks about it but he shies away from telling her more. Ethan is weary of Hecate and thinks that she is another person hired by his father to come looking for him because she lied about all the things she was saying about traveling when her facts were all wrong. And he leaves…I was like yes Ethan!
Dorian (Reeve Carney) and Angelique are walking while everyone is starting at them because as you guys remember Angelique is a transsexual. She mentions that everyone is looking at them and Dorian tells her to let them stare. Angelique smiles and tells him something about his age and loved how they add these snippets of these well known characters because Dorian says in response that he is much older than he looks (very clever). Dorian is taking her to Gossima Parlour where they are going to play Gossame tennis aka Ping Pong…she beating Dorian in the game and are having a good time and kiss. (While I am enjoy this storyline…just feel that Dorian is off in his own adventure away from our gang and their story)
Hecate mentions to Evelyn (Helen McCrory) that she made errors with Ethan, but that also he smelled her and the lies. They mention that now they have no doubt he is Lupus Dei…and that they need to proceed with their plans of enhancement on Ethan. Hecate hisses at Evelyn and Evelyn tells Hecate to proceed with caution and she better not do that again.
Lily (Billie Piper) is putting on the dress that Victor bought and she walks out and Victor goes completely silent and then remembers to talk and tells her that she looks beautiful. Lily is uncomfortable wearing the corset saying it’s cruel and if wearing one is to please men…Victor tells her he wants nothing to cause her pain and that she can take it off if she pleases…she’s gonna take it off but tells him she will keep the high shoes she’s wearing because he likes them (these two are just gonna fall for each other aren’t they?).
The gang is still deciphering all these relics and Mr. Lyle is telling Sir Malcolm he can tell he is enjoying this as it feels it is a new quest for him. Sir Malcolm mentions that he is courting someone and tells Mr. Lyle that it’s Evelyn and he tells Sir Malcolm that he needs to proceed with caution…warning him. Ethan is mentioning to Vanessa about Hecate and how his father must have sent her and says how even her name was probably and alias. But Vanessa tells him that the name Hecate is from a character of Macbeth and how it means the Protector of Witches…that they can assume many guises. Ethan leaves to the kitchen and while walking he stares at the wall like he can sense something is there as he leaves we see one of the Nightcomers blended into the wallpaper as a chameleon. Ethan walks over to Sembene tells him if he is worried for Vanessa but he mentions that he doesn’t worry about her because she is a lioness. But Ethan asks if he worries for Sir Malcolm and Sembene stays quiet. Ethan asks him if the place he came from if he was a hunter and Sembene tells him partly…but the other part of him is private.
There is mention again about what Cut-Wife had said that Lucifer did not fall alone and Sir Malcolm tells Vanessa that this a prophecy foretelling the future and that it most likely about Vanessa and that angers her and tells them she is heading to bed. As Vanessa is walking up the stairs she can sense something and then this whole scene seems very eerie with scenes of Ethan/Sembene and Mr. Lyle/Sir Malcolm and Vanessa in her room combing her hair like the calm before the storm. Vanessa puts the comb down and she turns around and then through her mirror spots one of the nightcomers on the wallpaper and then all three nightcomers attack everyone. One nightcomer with Vanessa tears a piece of her hair and then Vanessa starts speaking in Verbis Diablo and leaves. One of them is choking Ethan and Sembene comes knocking her down and all three walk out the door and knock it down and then Hecate tells Ethan, “No sensible shoes now Mr. Chandler” and storms off. Everyone looks at Vanessa and that’s it end of the episode.
