Shadowhunters Episode 2.07 Recap “How Are Thou Fallen”

Shadowhunters came back this week with a humdinger of an episode.

Clary and Jace meet an angel and get a vision. Honestly everything having to do with these two this week was a blur, but not in a bad way, just in a “we crammed all this other stuff in the episode” way. I love that Clary is using her Shadowhunter training and deducing skills, she immediately knew Cleophus wasn’t shit by the name she referred to her as. I LOVED the fight choreography and direction when her and Jace went to save the angel and I am now super amped to know what the vision was about. This show has really made the most of its expanded budget and season,w with mythology deepening at the same time the production value goes up.

Izzy…girl…I just…

I just need to pray and wave some sage around Izzy cause homegirl is acting a fool. The addiction storyline is quite common when it comes to vampire blood, but having a character like Izzy go through it is interesting positioning. Homegirl is just acting a mess, from trying to steal from Aldertree to making a “joke” to Simon about him biting her to going to the vampires. I want Jesus (or the Angel) to come fix it and bring my bad ass girl back! It was nice to see her counsel Alec about him overthinking wanting to have sex with Magnus though.

So…did the writers intend for this episode to revolve around the couples given it’s proximity to Valentine’s Day? If so, bravo to the writers. Of the pairings and shuffling, Simon being in the orbit of Maia, Jace, and Izzy in a short period of time provided the episode with some strong character and comic relief. I have no idea why Simon would ever take advice from Jace, but it failed spectacularly. Maia continues to be a precious cinnamon roll and I want her protected at all costs.

Malec
I have to dedicate a whole section to these two because you guys I have thoughts. First thought is, why do shows continue to do things like having certain characters pursue relationships as the world falls apart? I like Malec a lot, but how silly is it to have Alec galavanting to Tokyo and Prague with Magnus (portal or no portal) when Valentine has two of the sacred implements and was about a minute away from being able to command the soul sword? Shadowhunters please don’t do any more of this, my logical plot driven heart can’t take it.

Now for the big second thought and I say this with love and respect for Malec, I did not like the way that potential sex scene happened. Though next week’s preview leads me to believe that Magnus ends up not sleeping with Alec, the way this progressed was weird. I get that Alec is ready to get rid of that V-card but when Magnus mentioned that, even though he’s banged 50 people a year for about 400 years, he’s still vulnerable and they probably shouldn’t, I thought Alec would have paused. Him pressing on isn’t an issue of consent I don’t think but it is an issue of the show using the potential sexy times of it’s flagship ship for dramatic intrigue (we won’t find out what happened till next week) but not giving that scene the space it needed to breathe for us to be settled. I also felt like it was way too soon for sex to come up given that they have shared 30 mins of show time it seems and, once again, Valentine is fucking everything up! Alec, postpone getting rid of your V card till you stop him and maybe listen when your lover says you should wait.

Edit: So it looks like they did do the nasty and that I wasn’t the only person who felt like something was off. Check out how the show runner handled the criticism (in a surprisingly candid and thoughtful way).
