With only four episodes remaining on Girls, this week it was Elijah’s turn to shine. It was fantastic to see an episode focused on Andrew’s character. Elijah prepares to audition for a new Broadway show, when someone from his past shows up. Marnie gets a wake up call from someone she least expects. And Hannah awaits a phone call from Paul-Louis to tell him the news that he’s going to be a father.
Elijah (Andrew Rannells) is at work and his co-worker (guest star Jasmine Cephas Jones) asks Elijah why his ex-boyfriend is trending on twitter. Elijah tells her that Dill wanted to adopt a baby (but only a white baby) and that he got caught on the black market trying to buy one. She tells Elijah that now she knows why he dumped him. Elijah asks her if she can cover his shift, because he needs to go to an open call for “White Men Can’t Jump” a new musical. Hannah (Lena Dunham) and Elijah are rehearsing lines and Hannah keeps looking at her phone. Elijah irritated asks what is going on and Hannah tells him that she is waiting for a call from Paul-Louis and how stressful it is for her. There is a loud knock at the door and it’s Dill (Corey Stoll). He tells Elijah if he can come in, because the paparazzi do not leave him alone. Elijah isn’t having any of it and as Dill is leaving…Elijah calls him to come back. In the hallway Elijah tells Hannah to write everything that Dill says about him and to keep an eye on him. Elijah tells Hannah how his whole day has been screwed up with Dill’s appearance.
In the other plot of this week, Marnie (Allison Williams) sees that there is an eviction notice on her door of her apartment. Marnie is on FaceTime with her mom (Rita Wilson) and is asking for money. She tells her mom how she is completely broke. Her mom offers her the couch at her house and also tells Marnie how they need to practice for their performances as the Michaels sisters…Marnie annoyed hangs up giving her mom the finger.
Elijah arrives to the open call and sees how many people are there to audition. Immediately they call him and he starts stressing out and tells the person he needs to go to the bathroom. On his way out he meets Athena Dante, a girl there who is also auditioning and she can see that Elijah wants to leave. She convinces him to stay telling Elijah to sing whatever he is feeling at the moment.
Marnie goes to a pawn shop to sell the necklace she got on her sixteen birthday. She tells the pawn shop owner how this is a family heirloom and it is worth a lot. He examines it and tells Marnie that the necklace is about 20 years old. She gets angry that her mom lied about the necklace. Then she starts taking off her earrings telling the pawn shop owner how her dad gave her these. The pawn shop owner grabs one and scratches it on the glass and it immediately breaks…telling Marnie it’s glass. At this point Marnie is basically having a breakdown and saying how her whole family are liars. The pawn shop owner tells her that she does a lot of blaming and that the only liar is her and that kinda shocks her.
Elijah goes back to audition and he tells the casting agents he is going to sing, “Let Me Be Your Star” from the TV show Smash. And let me tell you Andrew was just amazing in this scene! I was like sing your heart out Elijah. After he is done they tell him okay and that he can come back for the monologue. Dill and Hannah are sitting on the table eating and he asks Hannah how far along is she…Dill tells her that he doesn’t want to buy her baby…she tells him she’s 3 months along. And that she isn’t sure if she wants to tell the father of the baby about her pregnancy. Dill tells her that babies need fathers and because he grew up without one…that he couldn’t father himself. Elijah is with Athena waiting for the next round of the audition and she tells him that he needs to stop checking up on his ex, because Dill is getting into his head. The open call agents come in and announce who has made the next round…they read off names and Elijah doesn’t hear his and gets disappointed. But surprise because the people that were called are the ones going home. So Elijah has made it to the dance portion.
Hannah finally gets the call from Paul-Louis (Riz Ahmed) and she tells him how it was her moral ethical duty to tell him that she’s pregnant and that he is the father. Paul-Louis shocked asks Hannah what she needs…she tells him that she needs nothing from him. Relieved by the news, Paul-Louis tells Hannah how is he glad…because he is not ready to be a father. Hannah’s face says it all, she’s disappointed with his reaction telling him how she feels this was a mistake and she hangs up. Dill comes into her room and comforts her and he also starts crying along with Hannah.
Elijah has reached the dance portion of the audition and this is such a great scene. They bring out basketballs and Elijah is messing up so bad. Elijah is done with the audition and Athena tells him if he wants to go to Starbucks with her. He tells Athena how he wishes he was younger so they could hang out, because then it wouldn’t feel weird. Elijah tells her that he needs to go home, but not before Athena tells him that Dill could have gone anywhere to hide, but he went to Elijah…because Dill is in love with him. Elijah getting a boost of new found confidence tells Athena how he might get cast in this show and how really talented he is.
Arriving home, Elijah walks in on Hannah and Dill eating pizza and watching television. Dill tells Elijah how he cast him off aside and that the only thing that Elijah wanted to do was to love him. Dill tells Elijah that he is ready to stop hiding. Elijah tells Dill how he can’t screw with him anymore and that he is his own team mate now and wishes Dill luck with his white baby as he walks to his room. Elijah calls out to Dill to bring a pizza to his room and that puts a smile on Dill.
Marnie is leaving a voicemail to Desi and she is telling him how she is assuming responsibility for her own life and for him not to worry about sending her money. She tells him how she is moving in with her mom and that he doesn’t owe her anything. Marnie even goes far out to tell him she wishes him well and hangs up.
Elijah wakes up (Dill is sleeping right next to him) to a phone call from the casting agents telling him how he can’t dance, but how he has his great essence and want him to read with the producers. Hannah is at the doctor’s and as she sits down she just sees pregnant couples and Hannah has this sad look on her face.
