Oscar Predictions: Pre-Festival Season Update

We are so close to Oscar season really starting in earnest. Venice and Telluride begin this week and Toronto is only a week and a half away, followed by New York Film Festival. So that meant it was time to give the Oscar Predictions the old update. Given that there has been so much movement with category changes and pictures entering the race, it was harder to update these Oscar predictions than I thought it would be but here goes nothing.

Review: Fruitvale Station

This review was originally published at Awards Circuit during the Sundance Film Festival.

Every so often as a critic you get the opportunity to witness a film that’s so ingrained in your experience that it becomes difficult to even comprehend how you feel about the film. On one hand, Fruitvale Station is a rich, if slightly problematic, retelling of the day in the life of Oscar Grant, the Oakland man who was shot by police officers on New Year’s Day 2009. On the other is innate sense of personal relevance. I can still tell you exactly where I was sitting when I heard about him getting shot, the worry on my parent’s (and to speak the truth, all Black parents) faces that something like this could happen to me (their children), and the anger, not just African Americans, but most Bay Area residents felt when the officer who shot him was only sentenced to two years jail time. There’s no way to divorce those experiences from watching a film like this. However the movie doesn’t ask you to, it just wants you to be in the moment as it tells it’s story. For those reasons, Fruitvale Station is a feat of movie making, something that operates well within the medium and invites you to bring your emotions along for the ride.

Oscar Predictions at the Halfway Point

So we have reached the halfway point of the film year, therefore Oscar predictions start to morph into the blood sport they usually are. I’ve already given my opinion on the film year so far, but I thought it was time to revisit the Oscar predictions.

Best of the Year in Film…So Far

So we’ve reached the halfway point of the year and my goodness has it flown by. It seems like just yesterday that I was headed to Sundance to check out some indie films and now we are right in the middle of the blockbuster season. This has been an incredibly diverse year in movies so far, and yet nothing has particularly jumped out in my mind as being amazing. At this point last year, we’d already gotten The Avengers and Magic Mike. While nothing has quite captured my imagination, there have been some pretty good movies. Let’s take a gander!
