Five. Ten. Sliding Scale. These are the terms folks in Awards blogosphere use to describe the Academy’s choices for Best Picture. The Academy recently had a meeting to decide upon what they want to go with and whatever they pick is sure to cause much discussion. I’ve been thinking about the concept of Best Picture a lot since the Academy expanded the field then went to this bs sliding scale.
So the Academy Awards are over, thank goodness. A lot happened, jokes were said, awards were won, but now it’s time to look at the stuff that worked and didn’t.
Well, the time is almost upon us. Ballots were finally turned in yesterday and we have one of the more interesting Oscar races that we’ve had in a while. This makes for some wonderful television but as far as predictions go, it’s like point and pick. I’ve never felt so unsure about my choices for Oscar predictions and am fully prepared to do terribly. But that’s the fun of doing these, isn’t it? Here are my final predictions.
Well we’ve finally heard from the Academy on what they consider some of the best in film this year and like most Oscar nomination mornings we got some shocks. I didn’t wake up at the crack of dawn to look at that Oscar nominations but when I finally saw them, I instantly let out a chortle. Let’s dig into the nominees with some analysis.
‘Twas the night before Oscar nominations and all the bloggers/critics/awards enthusiasts are hedging their bets at what will be announced tomorrow. For me, this has been one incredibly interesting phase 1 with films like Nightcrawler, American Sniper and The Grand Budapest Hotel making strong cases while the likes of Unbroken and Fury have faded a bit. There are so many ways the awards can go given that all categories are being announced live. Will we get 9 Best Picture nominations again? Will one of the big front runners miss? We’ll just have to wait and see.
Happy New Year to all of you! I hope you are excited cause we are heading into the home stretch before the Globes announce their winners and the Oscars announce their nominees. Because of this, the Oscar predictions needed to take on a more drastic look, so I really tried to be judicious with my choices. Enjoy!
