Magic at the Movies: How ‘Now You See Me’ Missed the Mark

now_you_see_me-192x300I thought about doing this piece as a standard review but I’m tired and I don’t particularly feel the film demands much attention for its strengths. Sure Now You See Me is a fairly entertaining film that keeps you enthralled till the end through it’s fun performances and high octane action. I gave it two and a half stars and I’ve no doubt many people will come away from the movie with higher grades than that. However, what interested me the most about the film were it’s short comings, specifically how the magic was portrayed, so I’ve decided to focus on that.

6 Things I Learned from Watching the first two episodes of Teen Wolf Season 3

1920-twWe’re so close! June 3rd is around the corner and the long wait is almost over. This has literally felt like the longest wait for a tv show ever and we’ve still got a few more days to go. Since I screened the episodes last week I’ve been dying to talk about them, so how about I regale you with some things I learned from the first two episodes? Dig in!

Druids and Demon Wolves: A Teen Wolf Theory

200px-Odin_and_FenrisGod is it really still 6 more days till the third season of Teen Wolf premieres? I’ve seen the first two episodes but gah damn has it felt like the longest wait since Beyonce’s Grown Woman. Anyways, last night those evil bastards the Teen Wolf folks released a new promo with a creepy voice over talking about apex predators and demon wolfs. This sparked a whole lot of discussion about wtf we just saw. Luckily I follow amazing people on Twitter like hoechled and we had a convo regarding what this could mean and also how Lydia might factor into the story. Check it out!

Top 10 Summer Tv Shows I’m Most Anticipating

watching-TVAh Summer. The time when the weather gets hot, the tv gets slightly trashy, and everyone is generally happier. I, for one, have always enjoyed summer tv shows because it’s one of the few times during the year when creators seem to understand what their shows are about and don’t try and do too much. In the past few years summer has really turned into a breeding ground for tv shows to flourish and so today I thought I’d take a look at the summer shows I’m most anticipating.

Teen Wolf Theory: Is this Ms. Blake’s first Bird Attack?

tumblr_mnbey3kVTQ1s0jowvo7_250So I take it by now you’ve all had a chance to watch the clip that Teen Wolf released via Hulu? If not you can watch it on Tumblr here. In the clip Stiles and Lydia have some fun banter before all hell breaks loose as a flock of birds breaks through the window of new teacher Ms. Blake’s classroom and attack everyone. It’s an incredible scene and the graphics are spot on (I see those tax credits are being put to some use) and there are so many layers to it, put there’s one thing in particular that caught my eye.

Op-Ed: Is Scarcity in Art a Good Thing?

Mona_LisaOne of the best things about the advent of this here internet is that it opens the airwaves for dialog and opinions of people you would never have heard of without it. It’s how I ended up writing for Awards Circuit and also how I discovered the Operation Kino podcast. For those of you un familiar with OpKino, it’s a podcast that features four film writers, Da7E from Latino-Review, David Ehrlich from Film.com, Katey Rich from Cinema Blend, and Matt Patches of Hollywood.com. On a recent Tuesday episode, they spoke about scarcity in art and it’s merits. It was a fascinating discussion, a topic I’ve often thought about and it seemed like an interesting place to start a discussion.
