‘Teen Wolf’ Recap: Episode 3×01 “Tattoo”

Scott and Derek bring Isaac back to the Hale house where Derek evades questions about the alpha pack, informs us that the house has been taken over by the county, and that Isaac hasn’t healed on the inside. My mind went about 500 different places with that statement and not a one of them was good. Scott decides that Isaac healing on a table after his ordeal is a good time for him to call in that favor. After sharing with Derek the reasoning behind getting his tattoo (he called the two bands an open wound, saying that he’s trying to better himself), Derek lights a blow torch. Stiles has to hold him down as the flame causes him to wolf out and subsequently pass out. When he wakes up, the band has taken and Derek tries to get him to swiftly leave the premises. Scott recognizes that the door has been painted and despite Derek telling him to leave, scratches all the paint off of the door to reveal the alpha pack symbol. Derek reluctantly tells Scott that a pack of alphas is in town, currently and they are led by someone named Deucalion.

We intercut this revelation with The Girl fighting the entire Alpha pack by herself (bish do it!) in the locker room before she gets quickly overwhelmed. However, she meets her end, she tells Deucalion that she knows he’s worried of the man Scott will become and Deucalion tells her he has the perfect way to eliminate the threat, get Derek to kill him. Then he slashes her throat.

Final scenes show Lydia and Allison trying to decide on a paint color for her room, when the two realize the bruises might be a symbol. We’re transported then to a bank vault where Boyd (PRAISE JESUS!) is alive but terrified. Suddenly a female hand grabs his and squeezes. And scene.

Wow that was some premiere. Now let’s wrap it up with a couple of thoughts.

Questions/Comments/Queries/Criticisms/Complaints
-Where are Lydia’s parents and do they know their daughter is having sex on a school night?
-Did Derek have any interaction with Deucalion during the 4 mth gap and will we find out about it?
-Also, I know this season will see Derek and Scott have a “better” relationship but it is on shaky ground. Why did Derek try and play Scott then say he needs all the help he can get with the alpha pack? Sir, you gotta figure out how to use words.
-Everyone looks AMAZING. This fucking cast is genetically gifted.
-I have complete faith in Jeff Davis but it was weird he killed off The Girl in the first episode. That means we’ll prob have to wait till episode 11 before we get any insight on her.
-Technically, the episode was clicking on all cylinders and the direction/cinematography was brilliant. My only technical complaint is in an episode with a hyper realistic bird attack, why do all of the rest of the big FX look so damn fake?

Episode Grade: B+
MVP: Holland Roden for sheer characterization and Meagan Tandy for intrigue.
Best Scene: I’m going to cheat and say that the alpha scenes in the hospital. Those were masterfully choreographed.
