Things have moved around a lot on the site this past week with me finally moving the site to a self host (Bluehost for those who care) and have also shifted this top 10 series to Thursday for the time being. With Superman flying back into the multiplexes this week in Man of Steel, I thought I’d take a crack at ranking the top 10 superhero films of all time. I often get asked about my thoughts regarding superhero films, mostly to do with my apparent terrible lack of overwhelming love for the Dark Knight saga, and indeed you will not find any of his films on this list. There are some odd choices but I tried to factor in nostalgia, characterizations, and impact, so check it out!
Words cannot express how much I love The Civil Wars. Ever since they burst onto the scene with the wonderful pseudo Negro spiritual (in my mind)/morality tale Barton Hollow, I have been a moth draw to their flame. I own every album, including the unplugged session, so you know I was excited when they released their new track “The One That Got Away.” it is a quintessential Civil Wars song, from the beautiful orchestrations, stunning vocals and haunting lyrics. Given that I have seen a documentary about BDSM porn with explicit scenes, I am hard pressed to consider This Is the End the strangest film I’ve seen this year. However, it’s certainly the craziest thing to come out of a big studio in a while, with it’s million and one celeb cameos, raucous atmosphere, and wild twists and turns. To say that this film is funny would probably be an understatement, and yet the laughs don’t quite go as far as the running time of the jokes.
We’re back this week with an official name, some cool theories, and a fantastic episode of Teen Wolf to review. “Chaos Rising” really upped the ante for this season and we break down every moment as well as get into the tumblr Q&A Jeff did and talk about a possible fandom situation happening. And we may or may not have gone on a tangent about Stiles possibly being bisexual. Enjoy!
You guys, omg this damn show. Tonight’s episode of Teen Wolf titled “Chaos Rising” might be one of my favorite hours of Teen Wolf ever, despite some issues it had with editing. My jaw was on the floor by the end of this crazy episode and I’m now extremely terrified and excited for where the season will go from here. Let’s dive in…
So something kind of wonderful happened on last night’s Tony Award telecast. Amidst the wonderful opening number and raucous atmosphere, history was made: two women (Pam MacKinnon and Dianne Paulus) won the directing prizes, Cyndi Lauper became the first woman to win for Best Original Score without a writing partner, and four out of the eight acting winners were African American. Wait, what? Yes, the Tonys became the anti-Oscars, with women and minorities just winning every damn where. It was a wonder to behold not only for the sheer weight of the occasion, but because it didn’t feel out of place or momentous, just felt like the right people won. After doing the latest Awards Circuit podcast where in the subject of race came up and spurned on by a colleague’s great analysis of sexism within the Academy, I wanted to share my thoughts on why I think Hollywood is severely behind in terms of equality.
