Girls Recap: Episode 3.12 “Two Plane Rides” (Season Finale)
Terence Johnson March 23, 2014 ArticleHannah (Lena Dunham) is checking her mail and runs into Adam’s sister, Caroline (Gaby Hoffman) she surprises Hannah and finds out that Caroline has been shacking up with her neighbor Laird (Jon Glaser). Both are having some small talk and Caroline tells Hannah that she is pregnant and also asks about how Adam is doing, Hannah tells her that he’s going to be in a play and she tells Hannah that is she happy for him and also hopes that he doesn’t shuck off Hannah like a piece of summer corn with the success he will get from this Broadway show. Hannah goes back to her apartment and opens a letter and is surprised and excited about it.
Hannah goes to Marnie’s (Allison Williams) apartment and tells her the exciting news that she has been accepted to grad school in Iowa into the Writers’ Workshop program, which is an amazing MFA program. Marnie is super excited and both proceed to be happy about the news.
Jessa (Jemima Kirke) is with Beedie (Louise Lasser) talking and Beedie mentions that she wants drugs from Jessa, but not for the reasons she thinks she wants Jessa to help her commit suicide, that she is the only person that would understand and kinda leaves Jessa thinking about it telling Beedie that she is processing everything.
Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) is in line at her school to pick up her cap and gown since it’s almost graduation time, the student that takes her school ID tells her that she has been flagged and needs to talk to her advisor. Next scene we see her at her apartment throwing stuff all over the place and we hear someone knocking and it’s Marnie. Shoshanna tells Marnie that she is not graduating because her freaking glaciology professor failed her and she’s missing 3 credits in order to graduate. Marnie offers her some comfort telling her about her college experience and Shoshanna doesn’t really find solace in that neither, saying that’s great both are failures. Marnie then proceeds to tell Shoshanna that she slept with Ray more than once and she tackles Marnie to the bed and yells at her, “I hate you!”
Hannah calls her parents, Loreen (Becky Ann Baker) and Tad (Peter Scolari) to tell them the good news of her being accepted to grad school in Iowa. Both are thrilled for her and Hannah also expresses some concerns that she is not sure that she wants to go, but her mom tells her that when these types of opportunities come up you need to say yes to them and then figure it out.
Adam (Adam Driver) is in the dressing room getting ready for the show and Hannah comes in telling him that is she so proud of him and they both say that they love each other and then Hannah tells him her big news that she got accepted into grad school in Iowa and she is definitely thinking of going and that they will figure things out. She wishes him good luck and leaves the dressing room leaving Adam pensive.
Hannah, Elijah (Andrew Rannells), and Ray (Alex Karpovsky) are waiting for the show to start and Marnie and Shoshanna come join them and Shoshanna goes up to Ray telling him that at intermission they will have a chat.
Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) is in his dressing room and Marnie is knocking and comes in and gives him an opening night present and it’s a guitar pick from his hero James Taylor. Desi thanks Marnie and gives her a hug, which then needs to a passionate kiss they stop and she leaves the dressing room all smiling.
Major Barbara is about to start everyone is sitting down next scene they are already in intermission and Elijah is telling everyone that Adam wasn’t even in the first act. Marnie tells Elijah about her kissing Desi and tells her that he doesn’t think that it end well in the long run. Ray gets Shoshanna those M&Ms she wanted and they talk, Shoshanna tells Ray that she wants him back that she misses him and that she made a mistake. She tells him that he made her more stable and that she loves him, Ray reminds her that she is the one that left him and that now they are in different places (clearly we can see that Ray doesn’t want to get back together with her) he thanks her for breaking things off between them because that made him change into the person he has become now and leaves Shoshanna crying alone in the lobby.
Back to Major Barbara it’s the second act and Hannah is asleep on Elijah’s shoulder and he wakes her up to see Adam on the stage, we see Hannah light up by seeing Adam’s performance and she is all smiles. The show ends and the whole group cheers him on. Marnie heads to the bathroom where she sees Clementine (Natalie Morales), Desi’s girlfriend and confronts Marnie and tells her that she knows she up to no good with her intentions with Desi and soon he will find out the type of person Marnie is, leaving Marnie distraught.
Back to Jessa, where we see her with Beedie and she gives her some pills to take and Beedie tells her that she is moved that Jessa is doing this for her and tells her that she better not take any after she’s dead. Jessa tells her that she won’t and that it doesn’t look as fun when helping someone commit suicide.
Hannah and Elijah are waiting outside for Adam to come out and he finally does as he walks out he has a serious look on his face. Hannah and Elijah tell him he was amazing and he tells them he was freaking terrible. Adam tells Hannah why did she tell him about Iowa and this is why he didn’t want to see her before the show…Elijah leaves them both so they can talk. Hannah is shocked at Adam’s reaction about Iowa and tells him that she thought it would be great news for them as a couple. She tells them they can work it out and he tells her that he is sick of working things out and why can’t just one thing be easy with her. Hannah congratulates him on his opening night and walks away.
Jessa is with Beedie still waiting and Beedie has a moment of clarity telling Jessa to call 911 because she doesn’t want to die. Shoshanna is at that apartment fixing back all the things she threw everywhere. Marnie is outside and sees that Desi and Clementine are fighting. Adam and the rest of the cast of Major Barbara are taking photographs and Adam looks miserable. Hannah arrives at her apartment sees her grad school acceptance letter smiles and clutches the letter to her chest and looks really happy.
