Penny Dreadful Recap: Episode 2.02 “Verbis Diablo”

Read Time:7 Minute, 18 Second

An old friend returned to help our gang figure out what’s going on with the Verbis Diablo, while the dark forces continue to plague Vanessa. Victor contemplates with his feelings towards his newest creation, we finally saw Dorian and he’s met someone quite interesting and this episode really had the stuff of nightmares in one particular scene that I was like why am I watching this alone late at night…so let’s begin!

We start with Vanessa (Eva Green) and she looks distressed and hasn’t slept at all…she goes to Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) and tells them that the Nightcomers came to her and they were real but not real that is she going mad and that not even her prayers are safe. He tells her that he won’t leave her side and “Wherever they walk, they will walk together” he tells her… Vanessa takes comfort in that and tells Sir Malcolm that she doesn’t know what she would do without him.

Our new trio comprised of Victor (Harry Threadway), Caliban (Rory Kinnear), and Brona (Billie Piper) are wondering if now that she has been reborn will she be simple minded? Will she remember her past? All these questions that Caliban wants to know, but Victor simply answers that they need to give it time as Brona holds Caliban’s  hand. Victor reminds Caliban about Proteus and how he killed him (will never get over this) and he tells Victor that you never forget your own and that he is atoning for Victor’s sins…he mentions that Brona is their future creation and to tread carefully.

Sir Malcolm takes Vanessa to these tunnels where there are people in need, who are infected with cholera and he has come here for years to feed and provide people without funds, just like a homeless shelter in Victorian era London. Back with the investigators that are trying to figure out who committed the Mariner’s Inn Massacre they visit one of the surviving victims, but he can’t talk because his face is all covered up with bandages and mention to him that they hope he recovers soon to find out who did this to him (Ethan they are on to you).

Victor is with Brona and she mentions that she has been robbed of her memory and I guess Victor has told her they are cousins because that’s what she believes. Victor gives Brona a new name and now she will be called: Lily, which is the flower of resurrection and rebirth and that with time she will learn.

Sir Malcolm tells Vanessa that he needs to go meet a friend and she tells him that she will stay a while longer… she meets Caliban who is here in these underground tunnels. She offers him some soup and he introduces himself as John Clare and have a wonderful philosophical conversation (Eva and Rory where just amazing in this scene) I really love when we see these type of interactions with these characters and the rich poetry in these scenes.

We finally see Dorian (Reeve Carney) and he’s looking at a photograph of Vanessa, someone approaches him and tells him that they hope that woman in the photograph is his sister. The woman sits on the table and introduces herself as Angelique with no last name to make it utterly mysterious as she tells him. Already know something is going on with this person as we will see later on. Angelique eggs Dorian in saying if he would like to see her bedroom and he declines, but she still gives him her card where she can be found at her place of work. She tells him as she is leaving, “Stay young and beautiful…it suits you” and you can bet that Dorian is intrigued even more now.

Sir Malcolm is at a store and Evelyn (Helen McCrory) spots him, he tells her he is here to get Vanessa a gift and she starts sampling some perfumes for Sir Malcolm and straight out flirting with him, where she whispers to his ear in Verbis Diablo something and then he tells her that he likes that scent.

Ethan (Josh Hartnett) along with the rest of the gang welcomes Mr. Lyle (the curator at the British Museum) because they need help in translating the Verbis Diablo…where he tells them the story of Brother Gregory and how there was a written example of the language in the British Museum in some relics. Vanessa asks Mr. Lyle what happened to Brother Gregory and he tells her that he was in confinement and was possessed by the devil and burned at the stake…and that leaves her pondering.

Dorian goes to Angelique’s work and it’s basically a gentleman’s place aka whorehouse and he asks the owner for Angelique. He goes to her and she’s in a robe and tells him, “I hope you know what you’ve bought” Dorian with a smile says that he does and she drops her robe to reveal a man’s body…I knew Angelique was a transsexual. I love how free this show is with sexuality and how it doesn’t matter who you can fall in love with…it’s refreshing.

Sir Malcolm and Evelyn are at this shooting range type place outdoors and both seem to be having a good time spending the evening together. He mentions that he is estranged from his wife that there is no love between them for quite some time, but he is bound to his wife and that will not change.

Victor is washing Brona’s hair and she wants to know more about their relationship since they are cousins. Victor tells her that they were very close growing up. Brona wants to know who the other man is aka Caliban and Victor tells her it’s her intended person to marry, but she can decide what she wants to do and that he won’t let anyone hurt her.

Ethan and Mr. Lyle head to the British Museum to look for the lost relics that have writings of the Verbis Diablo, while searching Ethan finds this painting of two wolves and a saying in Latin, “So the wolves will protect” and Ethan starts remembering or kinda starting to figure out what might be happening to him. They find the Verbis Diablo relics and leave.

Evelyn’s daughter, Hecate is following his couple with a baby (I already know this can’t end well) they are waiting to catch the train and she also gets on…the light’s go off and we see Hecate in her Nightcomer form and slashes both their throats and then takes the baby.

Back with the gang they have gathered all the relics and put them on the table…they are written in Latin and Arabic and it is all the stuff from Brother Gregory that they could find and now the question asked in the group “Who’s good with puzzles?”

Caliban arrives to Victor’s and is looking for both him and Brona, we see Brona with short blond hair and I was like hello Rose Tyler it’s been a while since I’ve seen you. She tells Caliban that she doesn’t remember anything and he tells her not to worry that it takes time and that they have to be patient with each other…both of them introduce each other and shake hands…while Victor looks at both of them.

So guess who’s hanging around with Evelyn and her coven of witches? Good old Mr. Lyle, he’s been working with her and wants to know what our gang knows and also wants to know more about Ethan…he mentions they don’t know much and she threatens him saying she doesn’t want to expose Mr. Lyle for his indiscretions and for being a sodomite so he better keep tabs on them. Hecate arrives with a bag (baby inside, oh man) and Evelyn heads downstairs to a room filled with these creepy porcelain dolls (really the stuff of nightmares and I was watching late at night alone).

Evelyn places the baby on this table and stabs it in the middle and removes the heart and starts chanting the Verbis Diablo and all around there are shots of these dolls and I just can’t because man these are some ugly looking dolls…had flashbacks of the movie “Dolls” we see that she puts the heart inside this doll and sews it up and then she pushes the doll up and we see it’s an exact replica doll of Vanessa (truly some creepy voodoo type stuff) the  next frame flashes to Vanessa and she feels this thump inside her chest and is kinda stunned and breathes heavily like what in the world just happened and that’s it fade to black.
