This week on Penny Dreadful, we find out just how interwoven some of these characters are with one another…we finally start seeing why Ethan plays an important factor in the battle of good and evil. Vanessa spends more time with Dr. Sweet while danger looms…Caliban finds out more about his past…and of course in the nature of this show we have an interesting scene that involves a whole bunch of blood.
Ethan (Josh Hartnett) is dreaming again and he sees Kaetenay (Wes Studi) covered in blood he screams at him…Ethan wakes up and sees Hecate (Sarah Greene) sitting down looking at him…they are hiding out at a barn after the massacre at the saloon. He tells her he needs to leave, but she wants to join him…saying that she will follow him to hell, because he is the Wolf of God.
Renfield is writing over and over the name Vanessa in the notebook he has, in the background you can hear that Vanessa (Eva Green) and Dr. Seward (Patti LuPone) are arguing, because Vanessa believes that they have known each other from the past…because she believes the doctor is Joan. Dr. Seward tells Vanessa that she is full of pain and that all these things she has told her are delusions and can’t be real…Vanessa grabs her arm and can see into the doctor’s past saying how she was hurt by a man…then asks the doctor if they shall walk together.
Meanwhile, Caliban (Rory Kinnear) is having more flashes of his previous life…someone that is riding in the carriage with him asks if he has family here and Caliban says yes. Back at Jekyll’s lab…Victor (Harry Treadaway) is asking the lunatic they had tied down some questions, but the man starts turning back into the way he was and is taken away. Jekyll (Shazad Latif) tells Victor that the serum only lasts for a couple of hours and he is frustrated…I love how we get to see the anger of Jekyll and the hints of his duality. Victor tells him that he can help with the regression and how he can make the serum last longer or make it work forever…how combining their work they can make a choir of angels especially someone in particular.
Lily (Billie Piper) and Justine are out and mentions to her how all men are evil, but she tells Justine how there was one man aka Ethan who treated her well…but tells her that’s a story for another time. In the background they see a group of suffragettes yelling into the crowd about how women should have the right to vote, Lily mentions how these women want equality…but what her and Justine need is mastery and when you go to war…there’s an army that needs to be assembled.
Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) and Kaetenay are on a train and Sir Malcolm wants to know more about why they are on the search for Ethan…Kaetenay mentions that Malcolm is here on this journey, because Ethan trusts him with his life. He mentions to Sir Malcolm that Ethan is with a women that is like a demon and Malcolm tells him that she is a witch. Kaetenay tells him that terrible things await them and all their lives will come to an end and that Ethan is the only one that can save them all…that he is the chosen one. Ethan and Hecate are scoping out this place and see some horses they can use….he mentions how he hates everything about this place and mentions how his Apache father taught him to believe in the things that one hardly understands. A man pulls a gun of both of them, but Hecate goes over to the man kills him and also the man’s wife who is inside. Ethan looks repulsed at what she has done, but Hecate tells him that he may think she is a monster, but what about all the bodies he has left behind as she smiles. Inspector Rusk and the Marshall are at the saloon with all the dead bodies that Ethan left behind…Rusk says that Ethan had help and how there is more to him than meets the eye…he asks the Marshall if he believes in the occult and he says no, Rusk tells him he should.
Caliban is walking and spots Vanessa in the background and he smiles…as Dr. Sweet (Christian Camargo) approaches her and Caliban smiles…seeing how happy Vanessa looks…he leaves and sees this upstairs window from the same building in this flashbacks. He asks the man in charge of the building if anyone lived here before…he says it has been empty for a while and Caliban gets aggressive on him and tells him he wants to know where the people that lived there are now.
Dr. Sweet is telling Vanessa how he is trying to explore new horizons…he tells her that his wife passed away a year ago (can it be Mina? I’m pretty sure it is) and how he is finding his feet again. Vanessa tells him that she has been trying to do the same thing and how she is finally healing again…in the background Dracula’s head minion vamp is following them. Caliban arrives to a building and goes up the stairs…he stops at apartment number, but in his nature sees that the attic is open and goes upstairs and spies in the apartment and sees his wife and son (who is very ill) and he starts crying…I truly felt for Caliban in this scene. Vanessa and Dr. Sweet arrive at a carnival and he suggests the Hall of Mirrors…they go inside and that’s when Vanessa spots the head minion vamp…she gets separated from Dr. Sweet and she starts panicking…the vamp appears to her and tells her that she has met his master before long ago in the white room and then he leaves.
Sir Malcolm and Kaetenay arrive at the ranch that Ethan and Hecate were at and see the dead bodies…Kaetenay tells Sir Malcolm that they are losing Ethan and need to find him now and if he can’t be saved in order to save him they need to kill the evil within him. Ethan tells Hecate that once they go into the desert they can’t stop and then they will meet his father. Hecate tells him that she wants to liberate his true self and how she wants to rule the darkness alongside him…all of a sudden bullets are flying their way and they leave on the horses quickly and it’s the Marshall and his men that were doing the shooting at them and the Marshall tells Rusk that a woman was with Ethan…as Rusk mentions how the plot thickens. Vanessa and Dr. Sweet are at a cafe and he wants to know what happened when she got lost inside the Hall of Mirrors…she tells him how she has enjoyed every moment she has spent with him, but tells him that things are too dangerous for him to be around her and to take that as a sign of love and tells him goodbye…Sweet gets angry.
Dorian (Reeve Carney) is with both Lily and Justine…we see he has a naked man tied up and it’s the man that Justine says that bought her at the age of twelve and how he pimped her out when he got tired of her…she grabs the knife that Dorian had and slits the man’s throat and she stabs him over and over again. Dorian kisses Justine while Lily watches…a moment later we see the trio all covered in blood together in bed having a threesome…this show I tell you.
At Dracula’s lair, the head minion vamp is about to get it from Dracula because he is livid that he talked to Vanessa and he tells the rest of his minions that when Vanessa is helpless and begs for him then they will have her, but until then no one touches her and tells everyone to feed on the head minion vamp and the rest of the vamps eat him. Caliban is back spying on his family…his wife wakes up and notices a pocket watch on the table (Caliban had robbed a drunken man on the street) in order to help them out. In the aftermath of their lust…Dorian and Lily are telling Justine that in order to build an empire you need to start with a single soldier and that she is the first, but there will be more and will create an army.
Vanessa is at Dr. Seward’s and she wants the doctor to use hypnotism on her, because she needs to remember what happened when she was locked away in Banning clinic. Finally Dr. Seward agrees and tells her that she will only be able to facilitate her journey and uses hypnotism on her…Vanessa sees herself in the white room and she starts describing everything saying how she was always alone and how the orderly would always bring her food and we see him and he turns around and it’s Caliban!
