Sorry for this recap coming a bit late, but there weren’t screeners available from this ep and given the craziness that ensued I totally see why. Tonight’s episode of Shadowhunters was so incredibly violent and really shocking. I totally enjoyed it.
I should have known that the show was setting me up for something awful to happen to Clary’s mom but I am such a sucker for good moments with kids and their parents that I was lulled into a false sense of security. Having possessed Alec be the one to do it added an extra twisting of the knife, because the two of them actually bonded this episode. I wonder where Clary will go now. I loved that rather than blame Alec she buckled down and went demon hunting, but where will this lead her next? Hopefully, she’ll remain super focused.
Jace’s storyline continues to be one of the best things about this show and Dominic Sherwood is doing a great job acting. He’s still the same headstrong Jace but now imprisoned and suffering from awful dreams, we see that he’s headstrong in accepting the consequences for his actions. That’s a HUGE change from last season where he basically didn’t have any. His moment of truth with the soul sword was pretty great. Y’all know I was not here for the incest storyline (and still am not) but at least it’s being used in a dramatically interesting way. Aldertree asking him if he loved Clary like a brother was brilliant questioning and Jace’s reply leads me to believe that the show is going to find some way to make it so they aren’t really siblings. I’ll be pissed that we were put through this foolery tho. Another brilliant moment was Jace saying that he couldn’t dedicate himself entirely to the Clave. This is waaaaaaaay more interesting than just having him say yes, as Shadowhunters could use some more morally grey people amongst it’s ranks.
So Valentine now has the Mortal Cup AND the Soul Sword and I just…how did this mother fucker get all the sacred implements????? Furthermore, how are they gonna stop him at this point?
I have dragged this show a bit with regards to vampire stuff but it did so well this week. Raphael’s torture at the hands of Aldertree with concentrated UV ray laser brought some joy to my science loving, vampire obsessed heart. This type of weaponry is something I wish more genre stuff leaned into, and something I was def planning to incorporate in my web series.
Additionally, finally having Raphael and Simon around each other for an extended period of time, along with Magnus, provided the show many of its best scenes. Learning about grave dirt being able to summon a vampire, seeing them jaw at each other constantly, and most importantly, hearing Magnus tell Simon that Camille saved him from suicide in 1870s London, was massively satisfying. Once Camille was summoned, we got perhaps our best understanding of Magnus yet as he mentions Warlocks can’t have kids and how he’s mad how she’s treating hers, and she says he sucks at being alone. Her being sent to Idris was for the best, but I’m glad she didn’t go without causing a bit of drama on the way out.
Finally, can we talk about how every third episode of this show someone or something breaks into The Institute? That shit is supposed to be impenetrable, and yet…just a mess. They need to invest in some better security or move.
