TIFF 2025: The Christophers, Fuze, It Was Just An Accident, Normal, and The Ugly

I have achieved my first five movie day at film festival in eons thanks to the Wednesday slate at TIFF. I was close to making it 6 but my body said no. If you want some spur of the moment thoughts, I document them on TikTok. Let’s dive into some more movies shall we!

The Christophers: What is art? What is commerce? These are but two questions posed in this film. I was delighted by the tete-a-tete between Ian McKellan and Micaela Coel as they sparred over various topics and the movie is adequately pleasant. It feels very minor Soderbergh though.

Fuze: An utterly preposterous final scene keeps this from being a really good movie, just merely decent, but I did have a good time watching Fuze. It’s a heist movie and a procedural and a thriller, and all the elements work together well. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, and Elham Ehsas make for some compelling characters to follow.

It Was Just an Accident: Yeah, I totally understand how this won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. Just a remarkable movie that manages to be a stern rebuke, a thriller, and one of the funniest movies of the eyar all in one. This is the first film I have seen from Jafar Panahi and what a start to my journey! I love the way Iranian directors pose simple moral questions to their characters and then watch them spin out.

Normal: Ben Wheatley is returning a bit to form with this hilarious and violent movie about a small town sheriff who discovers that the town is hiding a shady secret and ends up having to fight for the life he wants to live. Bob Odenkirk is already great at this type of part and it’s great watching him mow down people and get his action on. Wheatley crafts some really cool action set pieces in this one.

The Ugly: Directed by Yeon Sang-ho, I was immediately drawn to this film and the premise of this movie is so intriguing/mysterious. A man begins to learn more about his mother’s disappearance is juicy…but I think the movie does too much dragging along of its protagonist to really make this feel like a mystery rather less than despite the info that’s revealed.
