First Impressions: Now Apocalypse

Starz’s new show Now Apocalypse arrived in haze of glory. From the wild mind of Greg Araki, this show stars Avan Jogia and Beau Mirchoff as two roommates living in LA who begin to deal with some wild occurrences. I haven’t decided whether I’ll recap week to week (I’ll definitely keep watching though), but here are some snap thoughts.
-The Foolery. This show is wild, in many of the best ways. Some of the most on the nose things in this show are played so earnestly that they work. We’ll get more into the sex scenes later but listen, my wig was spun around several times.
-Sense of place. Yes, this is a show filmed in LA about LA, but I really enjoyed just how much of a character they made the city and how the characters relate. LA is a place where people go to dream but it also changes how you think and operate to get those dreams. Floyd, as played by Beau Mirchoff, is like how every screenwriter sees themselves, attractive, hardworking, banging a scientist, and meeting a producer at a coffee shop. It’s a really good deconstruction of the city.
-Sexuality and Sex. This show is incredibly cavalier about sex and sexuality and thank goodness. Whether characters are being interrupted mid-coitus or they’re giving each other handjobs in back alleys after saying they can’t (Avan and Tyler Posey were hilarious in this scene by the way), Now Apocalypse is really going to be going for it.
-The Acting. Avan Jogia is a star if this show is any indication. He gives such a fully realized performance so that when things go crazy, you can really go along for the ride. Beau Mirchoff gets a role befitting of the many talents he graced us with on MTV’s Awkward. The breakout of the show is going to be Kelli Berglund, who gets some of the most interesting moments in the pilot.
-The Plot. Of all the things this show throws at you, the “stoner/loner who can see the future or experience psychic things” is a bit…bland. Luckily there’s enough weirdness in the show to uplift it, but I’m gonna need more from these storylines.
