The Good, Bad, and Ugly 98th Academy Awards
Terence Johnson March 15, 2026 ArticleThe Academy Awards have ended with One Battle After Another being the diamond of the season, taking 6 total Oscars including Best Picture. In what has been a long drawn out, yet twisty awards season we got a show that seemed to mirror that. I think this Oscars will go down as one of the more fascinating and cool collection of winners in any ceremony. Horror films won two acting Oscars, Warner Bros won a ton with Sinners and One Battle and we got two fun performances.
The Good
Sinner Oscar wins. Michael B. Jordan winning Best Actor and Autumn Durald Arkapaw winning Best Cinematography are two of the most amazing things to happen at the Oscars in an age. Even though I didn’t pick either in my Oscar pool I could not have been happier. Speaking of the man that employed them…
OSCAR WINNER RYAN COOGLER! BAY AREA STAND UP!!!!!!
This isn’t necessarily a good thing but I must say it has provided me many moments of chuckling is Marty Supreme not winning anything, especially on the heels of the fairly silly Timmy Chalamet controversy.
Horror is grabbing the title of Academy’s favorite B-genre from scifi. Two horror films won acting awards! That’s wild. Also Frankenstein (horror in spirit) won 3 as well.
The Bad
Ties at awards shows are annoying. I’m sorry, I have never liked them and won’t like them and while it did give us some fun quips from Kumail, I was over it.
Discourse was always going to be very foolish but seeing people say that One Battle is gonna age like Crash is wild, when it is unequivocally one of the movie moments of the year.
The Ugly
It’s always ugly (appearances wise) when the winners are unable to be present, but even worse when they really don’t care to show up, despite having already won. I don’t mind Sean Penn not campaigning (in fact it’s great he won without it) but it was very awkward to not have him receive his third Oscar in person. He’s now in the pantheon of film actors, being the 7th person to make that feat. Tough scene to not be there for that.
