Penny Dreadful Recap 3.05 “This World Is Our Hell”

This week on Penny Dreadful, we go back to New Mexico…where everyone is on the search for Ethan, wanting him for different reasons…but pretty much it all ties together one way or another. And over in London…Victor and Jekyll are on the mission of finding a permanent cure to madness in hopes of bringing back Lily to what she once was, but will it be enough? Also what the heck is going on with these men and falling prey to these women…oh silly men!

Back in the desert of New Mexico, Ethan (Josh Hartnett) along with Hecate (Sarah Greene) are on their way in search of his father…trailing them not so far in the distance are Inspector Rusk (Douglas Hodge) and the Marshall as are Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) and Kaetenay (Wes Studi)…who tells Malcolm that they need to kill the demon that is corrupting Ethan’s soul. And that is exactly what Hecate is doing…she is trying to put doubt into Ethan in what he believes and she tells him that he needs to embrace his sins *sigh*

Over in merry London, Victor (Harry Treadaway) and Jekyll (Shazad Latif) are with the same patient and are now testing the new serum that Victor has created in hopes of curing the madness and the cure being permanent. He tells Jekyll and the patient that this is an electrified dosage that he will inject in the prefrontal cortex of the brain and that he will have no memory of his past and will re-enter the world as an innocent lamb and that memories are what makes us monsters…at this point I am thinking to myself as I am watching that Victor has really lost it and all because of Lily.

We learn a bit more of how Inspector Rusk lost his hand as the Marshall asks him and Rusk tells him he lost it in battle and how he and his men were after an assassin and how he along with four other men survived…how he cauterized his wound and tracked the assassin and caught him…Inspector Rusk is one tough cookie. Ethan and Hecate can see them from across…Hecate continues to sway Ethan into the darkness telling him how much they are alike…he mentions how when he was in army the first person he killed was an Apache woman and regretted it and that is how he met Kaetenay, because he begged him to kill him. We switch back to Kaetenay telling Sir Malcolm how Ethan came to him wanting to die and atone to his sins, but he thought it would be crueler for him to live. Hecate is still trying her best to convince Ethan, she tells him that she can unleash demons on the men after him and Ethan says yes…oh Ethan! The men are at the campfire asleep when we see Hecate making a snake symbol and speaking the demonic language as she uses Ethan’s blood. Kaetenay and Sir Malcolm have arrived to the campfire where the men are and Kaetenay is slitting the throats of the men…as snakes start to appear from the ground…the ones that were summoned by Hecate…and one of them bites Kaetenay. The only ones left standing are Inspector Rusk and the Marshall as they see Sir Malcolm and Kaetenay leave.

Victor and Jekyll are arguing, because the patient still hasn’t woken up after the intense method that Victor used on him…Jekyll asks him if he will be able to bring Lily here and do the same to her…Victor tells Jekyll that when he first created her that in those first few days he was truly happy…oh Victor…you need to get over this woman! The patient finally wakes up and he can’t remember anything…so Victor’s method has worked.

Inspector Rusk tells the Marshall that whatever code he had followed no more…uh oh…Hecate and Ethan are riding when his horse drops on the ground, it’s dying since they have no more water…Ethan shoots it and Hecate asks him what will happen when the other horse dies…he tells her that they will die too. We get a quick scene of Victor back home and he is sniffing Lily’s dress and I am just not here for this at all. Ethan and Hecate are inside a cave and on the walls there are drawings…Ethan tells Hecate that it is the story of the first Apache and how a coyote opened a bag of darkness (when I watched this…I thought of another supernatural show, where someone plays a coyote and was like yep this is true it sure did bring darkness) he tells Hecate of a boy being born and that he faced the creatures of the night and defeated them. We go back to Sir Malcolm and Kaetenay and tells Sir Malcolm that if doesn’t survive the night…that he needs to tell him something of how when he came to this land he wanted to die, but that he received a vision of a world cast into darkness and how the animals of the night ruled…we see vampires all over and Ethan being lost to the darkness. Ethan getting more and more influenced by Hecate tells her that he is done trying to be good…and of course they have sex.

The three groups are all riding, then Ethan and Hecate are walking now (guess the other horse died) and are dehydrated and on the brink of death…when Sir Malcolm arrives with Kaetenay in the back of one of the horses…he gives Ethan water and pulls out his gun on Hecate wanting to kill her and Ethan pulls his gun out on Sir Malcolm…we hear horses approaching and it’s the men working for Ethan’s father. Finally we see Ethan’s dad and hello there Brian Cox…he tells Ethan that he is happy that he is home. Mr. Talbot and Sir Malcolm finally meet and are having a drink…when Ethan’s dad wants to know why his son spent a year living in Sir Malcolm’s mansion…he tells him that he hired him to help him find his daughter….and he also wants to know why he was riding with the Apache…and tells him that Ethan will live his last days here and that Sir Malcolm will help him. Hecate goes over to Ethan’s room and thanks him for saving her life and she tells him that he knows what he needs to do…he tells her yes and that he is going to enjoy it.

Ethan goes over to talk to his father…Mr. Talbot tells him that he didn’t bring Ethan back to make amends, but he’s here to save his soul. He tells Ethan what happened to his little sister and he wants to know where he was when the Apaches came to their home and attacked his family. Mr Talbot wants to show Ethan the massacre that happened and how he kept everything in place so Ethan could see. He mentions to Ethan how his brother was killed and then his mother, but the worst was how he had to witness what they did to Ethan’s sister that her tongue and eyes were cut out…he tells Ethan how he brought the devil to his door and gave him the key. His father tells Ethan that he will either repent for his sins or he will send him to hell himself…Ethan tells him he belongs in hell as the screen fades to black.
