Just when you think these awards are gonna go the way you think, here come the Golden Globe nominations to shake things up a bit. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association released the nominees for the 2014 Golden Globes and for the first time in a long time, had a tremendously solid lineup. Let’s dig into the Golden Globe nominations shall wee.

The Good
-The TV acting nominations are incredible. The Globes found it in their heart to give us really strong nominations in the acting categories, listing people like Corey Stoll, Josh Charles, Corey Stoll, Tatiana Maslany, Juliana Margulies, and Rob Lowe. Just aces.

-From a fantasy awards season standpoint, I’m happy that Captain Phillips and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom did well. Captain Phillips especially, really needed this boost to solidify its awards chances.

-For once, in the entirety of me paying attention to the globes, the Best Picture lineups in both categories are devoid of any tomfoolery! For a voting body that once put Alice in Wonderland AND The Tourist in the same lineup, this is an amazing improvement.

-The Wolf of Wall Street finally makes a showing at an awards show, picking up Picture and Actor nods

The Bad
-August: Osage County missing Best Picture (Musical/Comedy). Even though that lineup is stacked, this is a big miss for that movie.

-That U2 song from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom isn’t that good and certainly not better than Lana Del Rey or Florence + The Machine’s tracks for The Great Gatsby.

-Martin Scorcese missing Best Director.

-How much longer is that score for 12 Years a Slave going to continue to be lauded despite the fact that ~75% of that score is recycled music from Zimmer’s other film?

The Ugly
-Lee Daniels’ The Butler gets completely shut out. With that big of a cast and a great performance from Oprah, that film seemed to be a shoo-in to at least get Oprah a nomination.

-The Wolf of Wall Street not making screenplay is preposterous.
