If I Had an Emmy Ballot: Best of 2014-2015 TV Season

It’s probably not bold to say, but TV has firmly taken over the conversation. This isn’t to say movies are completely out of the equation, but the stuff happening on television is much more interesting and fun to talk about. Now that Emmy ballots have gone out, I decided to give my final take on the year from June 1, 2014 to May 31, 2015.

TV Observations

-For the first time, two freshman series top my comedy (Jane the Virgin) and drama (Outlander) series choices and honestly, there wasn’t much in the way of competition for either to take the top prize. While many of my favorite TV shows had decent seasons, there was nothing that really wowed me amongst the crowd of returning shows, week in and week out.

-The unquestionable best thing I saw on TV all season was HBO’s The Jinx. Despite knowing how it would end (I watched it about a month after the finale), nothing could prepare me for the power of the series and the filmmaking chutzpah displayed by Andrew Jarecki.

-While its true I don’t watch many comedies, trying to do my Best Actor lineup in that genre was like searching through a barren wasteland. So much category fraud to get to 6 nominees. Meanwhile supporting actor, guest actor, and best actress in a drama were the toughest things.

-TV Shows that should end next season: The Good Wife, American Horror Story, and House of Cards.
