This week on Girls, felt like we were watching a short film…of a woman who doesn’t know what has happened in her life and how did everything go so wrong…and how did it all lead up to this. This episode focused solely on Marnie, who we haven’t really seen much of this season apart of the wedding episode and for a couple of minutes here and there halfway through this season. Tonight we saw a familiar face from Marnie’s past and we went along on this wild adventure of this character trying to find herself, so let’s begin!
We begin the episode with Marnie (Allison Williams) staring off into space…as if she is a million miles away, Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) is singing and playing his guitar and she truly seems annoyed by it…even telling him why he keeps staring at her and playing “aggressive guitar” at her…she tells him that since they got into a fight, that’s the reason she isn’t talking to him and that she needs her space. Desi acting as his usual self says that she is being cruel to him and that he wants to kill himself while crying (can he just please shut up…so tired of this character).
Marnie’s on the subway and she gets off as she is walking down the street these guys cat call at her and she spots someone very familiar…her ex-fiance Charlie (Christopher Abbott) she tells him she’s married now, which gets an annoyed reaction by him…they catch up, Marnie asking what happened to the app business he had going on he tells her that it wasn’t for him and that some weird legal stuff went down. Marnie notices how differently Charlie now talks and that he has even developed some sort of accent. He invites Marnie to a party and she thinks he’s joking because the last time they spoke was when he told her that he never loved her. Charlie apologizes for acting like an idiot, but tells her that during that time his father had died and killed himself, which shocks Marnie because she didn’t know and agrees to go to this party…but first they need to find her a dress. They go dress shopping and while she’s trying on a dress…Charlie goes to use the bathroom next door. Marnie starts telling the store attendant her business on how she hasn’t seen Charlie in two years…while he storms in with wad of cash leaves it on the counter and leaves running away with Marnie.
They arrive at the party of the friend who asked Charlie to swing by and it’s an older man with a wife the same age as Marnie…Charlie has some business to attend to and leaves Marnie alone…she gives the man a pseudo name of “Magita Perez” the man propositions her into joining him and his wife later on their room. Marnie agrees charges him up all this cash upfront…Charlie returns and they walk off together…can’t believing Marnie said she was a hooker…he says all of this was a bad idea, because this isn’t her scene and she reacts telling him that he doesn’t know anything about her…but they can go have dinner with this newfound money she now has and they do.
After dinner both Marnie and Charlie are walking through Central Park and Charlie spots a boat by the lake and tells her to get in…they talk and then kiss as the boat turns over and they fall into the water (this underwater scene with Allison Williams was just shot so beautifully…loved it) as they are walking…this kid robs Marnie asking for her bag and jewelry saying she didn’t know people still got robbed and head toward Charlie’s place where they lay in bed together and just hug…she tells him what she is gonna do with him now as he mentions that they should run away together…they start kissing and have sex. Marnie decides to take a shower and Charlie mentions it’s outside (so communal shower…how nice…not) we have a quick scene with Marnie and this girl who lives in the building and asks Marnie why is everyone such a disappointment. Marnie starts fixing things around the place as she grabs Charlie’s pants something drops and it’s a needle along with a rubber strap clearly he’s been using drugs she yells at him and while he’s still somewhat asleep says he’s diabetic and she leaves.
Marnie arrives at her apartment and Desi is on the stairs waiting for her…she tells him she’s sorry in teary-eyed telling him that she doesn’t want to be married to him anymore. She mentions that it isn’t his fault…that she knew that marrying him was a mistake, but didn’t want to give up on another dream. She continues telling him that she doesn’t know who she is and that she is a ghost to herself. Desi tells her okay and do what she needs to do, but that one day she will be murdered and she tells him that maybe she will and that he’s right…and Desi starts crying saying how she needs to remember “The hope of the beginning” and she tells him at the time they met he had a girlfriend, so what kind of hope was there at the start…nothing at all. Marnie tells Desi that she has some serious stuff to work on, but his issues are not her problem anymore (finally this relationship is over! it’s about time Marnie saw the light) and she leaves. There is a quick shot of Hannah (Lena Dunham) and Fran (Jake Lacy) asleep and we see Marnie crawling into bed with them as she contemplates on her decision.
