2013 in Review: Web Series and Comics I Discovered This Year

Despite the fact that over the course of my life I’ve spent countless hours on the internet, it took me up until this year to really start watching web series and reading web comics. Which is perhaps why this list is so sparse in comparison but each of these has really inspired me. If you listened to the last Demon Wolfcast, you’d know that I am hoping to write a web series this year and I’ve been trying to watch my favorites again to see what I can glean from them. Also, I’ve enjoyed reading web comics, and one in particular really helped me in terms of learning how to focus on story. So without further ado, here are my faves!
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries
When I tell yall I spent countless hours not doing work and watching this series instead. I discovered this series in April and could not stop watching. Pride and Prejudice might be my favorite Jane Austen and the fact that they were able to modernize the tale was impressive. Also impressive was how they used social media to get the word out.
The Outs
This series is so melancholy (its about what happens after a hard breakup) but my word is the writing sharp and biting, and the acting is so good. What impressed me most is what the writers did with the time they have to tell the story, economy is everything.
Hunting Season
This gotta be the most foolish webseries I’ve ever encountered but its so good. It’s not the most well acted series out of these ones I’ve chosen, but it makes up for it in kinetic energy and frankness that these others don’t have.
Hustling
A gay for pay porn star reaches 40 and wants to become a chef. That’s a basic log line for this series, that admittedly began in 2011, and is still going strong this year. This series is kind of low key compared to the others but it’s intense without needing to be showy. Plus for showing a character that’s past his prime a bit.
Artifice
I loved this webcomic so much that I changed the title of this post JUST so I could include this awesome webcomic in my year in review piece. It’s a sci-fi strip about an artificial man and his human prisoner that’s incredibly rich in its storytelling. Such an interesting take on LGBT in the future.
Justice League 8
Listen, nothing will murk your thug faster than seeing baby versions of your favorite superheros and this webseries follows the Justice League as little kids. It’s so well drawn and I love how the author hints at many of the love triangles and bigger issues they’ll face.
