I can see the light of my 2013 awards! Lawd I’m almost done talking about the year that was 2013. In order to do this, I decided to group together some of the last prizes I needed to hand out and man did I hand some out. This was such a good film year that I even decided to invent some categories to honor more people. I’ve also included the worst films of the year in this post. Enjoy!

Film Review: Kill Your Darlings

Kill Your Darlings is a perfect example of how one can tell a familiar story in a unique, fascinating way. Many are familiar with the Beats generation, but the way debut director Johnathan Krokidas and co-writer Austin Bunn see it you haven’t seen the definitive version of the tale till you see their film. Kill Your Darlings is a fascinating sojourn into the origin story of the Beats, kind of like The Avengers: Beats Edition set in the backdrop of the suffocating rigidity of 1944 Columbia University with a sharp script filled with an incredible social commentary. In short, it’s one of the best films I’ve seen so far at Sundance.

Best of the Year in Film…So Far

So we’ve reached the halfway point of the year and my goodness has it flown by. It seems like just yesterday that I was headed to Sundance to check out some indie films and now we are right in the middle of the blockbuster season. This has been an incredibly diverse year in movies so far, and yet nothing has particularly jumped out in my mind as being amazing. At this point last year, we’d already gotten The Avengers and Magic Mike. While nothing has quite captured my imagination, there have been some pretty good movies. Let’s take a gander!
