Gotham premiered last night and I don’t feel like doing full recaps so let’s rank the villains!
Gotham premiered last night to some decent numbers ratings wise and I was one of the people in that number. i enjoyed the pilot, although I think they wanted the wink wink this is a Batman prequel stuff to go over better (it didn’t). But I am intrigued so rather than devoting time to a full recap, I thought it’d be fun to rank the villains!
1. Fish Mooney. I was reaaaaaaaaaally concerned about Jada Pinkett Smith and this part because of all the traditional Batman villains floating around. She could have easily gotten lost in the shuffle or felt to gimmicky, but Jada worked her acting magic and made this character so fun, as well as menacing.
2. Edward Nygma. Talk about making the most of the screen time. Ed was on-screen for maybe a minute or two and I cannot shake this character. Yes we know he’s gonna be the Riddler, and like the other villains they poke fun of that a bit, but the sheer acting might of Cory Michael Smith leaves a great impression. It also helped his appearance felt more organic than the rest of these characters.
3. Carmine Falcone. It was a pleasant surprise when Falcone popped up to save Jim and Harvey. I actually thought we wouldn’t meet him in this season but I loved his introduction. I also adored that convo he had with Jim about his father and how to proceed in Gotham. Love when villains murky up the heroes.
4. The Major Crimes detectives. So many people in Gotham aint shit but these two detectives are well meaning in their aint shitness. I think. They’d have registered as more nice were it not for the fact that one of them seems hung up on Jim’s fiancé! CHIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEE did we just get implied slash relationship 30 mins into a show on Fox?
5. Oswald Cobblepot. Pre-Penguin would have registered way more if the show hadn’t spent every opportunity reminding us he was going to be penguin or looked like one. However, he is super sadistic and a mess, that final scene was chilling. He’ll probably rise soon.
6. Selina Kyle. Of all the villains on the list, this one was the biggest disappointment. Selina did nothing more than have one semi-cool action sequence and then spent the rest of the episode climbing things and perching on spaces. Like why was she perched on that damn front gate at Wayne Manor? How’d she even get there? Did no one see her? Are there no security cameras?
7. Ivy Pepper. This poor child got like 30 seconds of screen time and wasn’t particularly villainous so last she is.
