Hey everyone, welcome to a kind of late edition of Film School Files. It’s been a bit since I’ve written about the progress of The Debt Must Be Paid, so here I am writing about the film.
I’ve been hunkered in an editing room for most of the past few weeks (in addition to producing 3 other projects which I’m sure I’ll talk about at some point). Editing is often referred to as a rewriting phase. So many things can change when you have all the footage in front of you. My movie has definitely gone thru it in the editing room. I cut out a scene, changed my opening a bit and had to try and craft the performances. Luckily, I’m working with an awesome editor Alison, who keeps me sane and is doing a great job on the film.
Rather than just chat about editing, Here I have an exclusive look at what it was like to edit one particular fight scene. Some interesting things to note is this clip is about 10 minutes for a fight that maybe takes 35 seconds, and this was like 3 full passes into the movie aka editing fight scenes is crazy difficult! A fun challenge, but an extremely difficult one. You want to make sure you highlight the awesome choreography (thanks Tony!) but also maintain the continuity of performance and pacing. How did we do?
So what now? Well, for those of you reading who graciously donated to my campaign, fear not! I have even more awesome editing trip videos for you to feast your eyes on and the perks should start rolling in next week (when I finally get an Easter break).
If the above whet your appetite for more, my campaign is still live! You can choose from awesome options like a download of the film to specialized commentary and podcasts right here!
As I move on to the next phases of post, I will definitely update you with more details. If you have any questions that you’d like me to answer I’m going to be doing a Q&A soon, so post them in the comments.
