I was recently going through some old articles that I had written and I came across an article I wrote nearly 3 years (3 years!) ago about the Best Superhero films of all time. Looking at the list made me cackle given how many more superhero films have come out since then (like 15) and just how the genre has changed. Particularly with TV coming into the fold, it seems the genre has gotten a much needed boost of energy. Since we’re pretty much on a break from superhero films till Suicide Squad, I decided to redo this list.
10. Batman
Reason: For being dark without being bleak, stirring performances and Tim Burton’s eye for weirdness.
Best Scene: The Joker explains his face
9. Guardians of the Galaxy (new!)
Reason: Pop confection meets the Marvel machine, not afraid to be weird
Best Scene: The Guardians escape from jail
8. Watchmen
Reason: It’s a graphic novel come to life with incredible visuals and a cynical world view
Best Scene: Anything involving Rorshach
7. Superman
Reason: It’s the template for big budget action with a rousing score and great performances
Best Scene: Superman saves Lois from the helicopter
6. Captain America: Civil War (new!)
Reason: For brilliant use of scale and character team ups, Spidey and Black Panther, backstory
Best Scene: the Airport battle
5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (new!)
Reason: A Cold war counterpoint to the WWII epic of the first one, brilliant action coreography
Best Scene: Knife fight between Winter Solider and Cap
4. X-Men 2
Reason: Maybe the best ending of any film on this list, introducing familiar elements in an organic way, gives every character time to shine
Best Scene: Jean Grey lifts the jet
3. The Avengers (new!)
Reason: For succeeding given the dgeree of difficulty, understanding the balance of character and spectacle
Best Scene: “Puny god”
2. The Incredibles
Reason: Pixar at it’s best, skewring and celebrating superheros, sense of wonder and family dynamics
Best Scene: The Jungle escape
1. Spider-Man 2
Reason: It’s the best superhero film ever made and one of the best sequels, pushes its series forward in an organic way, compelling villain, great action, fleshed out character motivations.
