Marvel’s Luke Cage Comic Con panel was just….so awesome. Here are the highlights:
-Netflix showed a triptych type trailer with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, as well as shots of Elektra and Punisher. Great highlights from the other shows. My favorite moment was where we got a slow motion shot of a guy’s hand breaking as he punched Luke in the face. The Punisher pops up at the end, which got huge applause, as did surprise guest Jon Bernthal and the announcement that the Punisher is getting his own series.
-It was so awesome to see such incredible diversity on that panel as Luke Cage has a Black show runner, main stars and villain. Chex Coker, the show runner, is a delight and insanely quotable. He spoke about how now is a great time for this show because “the world is ready for a bullet proof black man.” More than just the quote, Luke Cage, though a superhero show, isn’t shying away from its Blackness, with each episode named after a Gang Starr song, the incredible cast, and the homages (Biggie poster in one of the clips). Harlem is going to be a strong character in the show as well. Coker called this series the Wu-Tangification of the Marvel Universe.
-Speaking of clips, we got to see four show clips from luke beating up people and bullets bouncing off of him to seeing the scorching chemistry between Misty Knight (Simone Missick) and Luke (Mike Colter). My favorite clip was being Alfre Woodard and Mahershala Ali verbally spar about the terrible things that had happened to them. I want Alfre threatening to “cut your colorstruck ass” played on a loop at my funeral. and wedding. and at my job. just everywhere.
We got to see a brief sneak peek at Iron Fist, which showed Danny being found by some monks in the snow, him tied down in a cell, and then him punching his way out. They also gave us a look at a logo teaser for the Defenders, shared that Daredevil is getting a season 3, and genuinely blew the doors off the place.
