Learning from Gina Prince-Bythewood that Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph were cast the night before the Marvel team was set to go to New Orleans to shoot the pilot for Cloak & Dagger is staggering, but having seen the pilot, the old adage “good things come to those who wait” proves true. Olivia and Aubrey (who sounds just like Sterling K. Brown) are dynamite as Tandy and Tyrone and they should anchor the series well. The two adorable actors sat down with journalists during WonderCon to talk about their characters, shooting a TV show in New Orleans, and what they hope people will get out of the show.
How Their Damage Compliments
Aubrey mentions that the characters are incredibly damaged but that once they meet, they form a bond, despite their separations in social status, skin color, and class. Olivia says that one of the things they both can relate on is obviously developing powers, which is something new to them. The relationship is very complicated and they start off very unsure of what the situation is but as the season goes on, you’ll see a beautiful friendship unfold
Powers as Character Traits
One of the things I was most interested in was how the powers of Cloak & Dagger seem to be the opposite of how their characters appeared on the outside, with Tandy having light beams, despite her dark present, and Tyrone with Darkforce powers, despite having the seemingly perfect life. Olivia said that with Tandy being in survival mode and once she develops powers to create light daggers and throw them, it’ll be a new experience and will allow her to take back what life took from her. For Tyrone, Aubrey remarked that it might seem like everything is perfect but that Ty is suffering on the inside at first. He said that the dark force mirrors his dark skin and that it actually helps his character because it forces him to find his power to control it.
The Hardest Part of Bring the Character to the Screen
You want to respect the audience, but as Olivia notes, you want to put a current twist on what’s happening today. By tackling things in 2018, it makes it more relatable. It’s a challenge though, but they are up for it.
