The Emmy nominations are here! Unlike the Oscars, the Emmys like to announce their nominations when the work day has already started which is both nice and a nightmare. Game of Thrones received 32 nominations, most ever for a single season of a TV show, and HBO beat out Netflix for nominations with 137 to 117 respectively. NBC is next up with 58. Let’s dig in.

The Good
This might be the best set of nominations of my lifetime. There is stuff to quibble with but overall, they really highlighted some of the amazing work going on in the world of TV. Consider the following:

  • Pose got nominated for Best Drama Series and Lead Actor in a Drama. All this talk about visibility and diversity and look what happens when you give people a chance.
  • When They See Us actually led Netflix’s Emmy total with 16 nominations, 7 for acting. Yes Black and Brown people!
  • SCHITTS CREEK GOT NOMINATED FOR MULTIPLE EMMYS INCLUDING BEST COMEDY.
  • Lots of love for my favorite shows: Barry (yay Anthony Carrigan), Russian Doll (yay Music Supervision nom), Chernobyl, Veep
  • Ramin Djawadi being nominated for The Long Night. Some of the best music composition I’ve ever heard.

The Bad

  • I know it’s the final season of Game of Thrones but there is no way in hell 9 actors from the show should be nominated for Emmys, especially not 4 Supporting Actresses and 3 Supporting Actors. Did no one else give good performances in Drama Series? I can name several that could have been there.
  • Also, there are other Dramas! Lord this list is stale.
  • Rent Live being nominated for Best Variety Special (Live) is laughable because it was neither good nor live.

The Ugly
