The Oscars have just ended and just…chile…I’m not even quite sure what I watched. Soderbergh got a hold of the Oscars and decided that chaos was a ladder he wanted to build the show on. Anyways here’s my immediate thoughts.
The Good
- Loved the intro with Regina King.
- I generally loved the ambiance of the awards not being in the Dolby and the way they moved the camera around. It truly was the Grease Live of awards shows.
- The Ma Rainey makeup team landing the first Oscars for Black makeup and hair artists EVER.
- Getting anecdotes about the craftspeople was a great part of the show.
The Bad
- Husavik not winning Best Song is a travesty.
- Moving Director so early in the show really felt weird cause it denied Chloe Zhao and the show a big moment of build up. She’s the second woman and first woman of color to win that award and it just felt like any old moment because there was nothing special in the build up.
- While we did get some fun moments like Daniel Kaluuya talking about his parents having sex, the speeches were too long.
The Ugly
- Funny as it was to see Glenn Close doing Da Butt on live television, the Oscar trivia bit came at a crucial time in the ceremony aka too far into the show to be anything other than annoying. Especially considering how it cut into the in memoriam time.
- Moving Best Picture before the Lead acting awards is pure madness and chaos, especially considering the gambit didn’t pay off in either category! As much as I love Chadwick, his potential win did not warrant moving the show around as it would have been a nice moment regardless. Now the Oscars feel too long and anticlimactic, and Hopkins is not going to get the credit for a good performance because it became clear they were trying to manipulate the teleccast into a big Chadwick moment.
- A show about films, a visual medium, and the clips and montages were SPARSE. How about showing people why they should watch these films rather than telling them why.
