The final day of a convention is always a bittersweet ordeal and WonderCon was no exception. I was able to attend 2 panels that were actually pretty great.
Intro to 3D Printing – I actually have a 3D printer so this was a great panel and I loved getting to learn from Madd Props and I Am Beninator on some tips and tricks of the trade. I’m actually halfway convinced to buy a resin printer now that I’ve attended this panel if only because regular 3d printing takes a long time.
Tom Swift – Even though this was a video panel presentation, there was not a panel this weekend that did more to get me excited about a show or a movie than Tom Swift’s presentation. I must admit that I was very wary about the show because I did not jive with the Nancy Drew reboot (I’m much more a fan of what The Hardy Boys have done) and my worries about how they would handle a Black gay character. At least for the moment those fears have been put aside as Tom Swift looks to be incredibly fun and incredibly Black.
We screened footage from one of the show’s unique elements the Tomtage aka montage where Tom selects the gadgets, plan, and the shoes for his new mission. It’s a fun zippy moment that highlights the kind of style the show is going for. SPpaking of style, cause of Tom’s wealth, this show is very stylish from the clothes to the cars.
But most importantly was getting to see all the Black and queer people in front of and behind the camera. This show has a real opportunity to make a positive impact and I loved getting to hear the cast talk about what it meant to work with a Black crew, having Black artists incorporated into their sets, and how their identities make an impact on the story.
