The Oscars nominations are right around the corner and it will be fascinating to see what the Academy deems as worth. I’ve been doing my fake Oscar ballot for a while now and I always love to see where me and the Academy overlap, as well as celebrate the movies and performances I enjoyed. I am really thrilled with what the 2023 film year had to offer us. So many new voices that I can’t wait to see flourish and some daring swings by established filmmakers led to a really wonderful film year. Before we dive into the full list of nonimations and winners, I’ve found it fun to analyze my own list and pull out fun stats.
- 38 different films received a nomination. Down from last year’s 41 but on par with the 2021 list.
- I am dubbing 2023 The Year of the Woman : 6 of my 10 Best Picture nominees were directed by women, 3 out of 5 Best Director nominees are women, and 6 of 10 writing nominees are films written or co-written by women. That’s pretty amazing and not only a testament to the talent of those women, but of getting the shot to prove their talent.
- 10/20 acting nominations went to POC
- Godzilla Minus One was one of the best films of the year and led the nominations with 11…only to suffer an American Hustle like fate and not take home any wins. Still truly one of the year’s greatest achievements.
- This was a relatively low yield field, unlike last year when RR and All Quiet on the Western Front won 11 awards between them. 11 films split the awards and no film winning more than 3 awards (Anatomy of a Fall won Best Picture and two other prizes, this was a crazy strong year!)
