It’s panels like these that make me truly love going to conventions like WonderCon. Hosted by Ron Diamond, the Giants’ First Steps: Glimmer of Greatness panel showcased a select of some digitally restored student films from some of the most impactful animated film directors of all time. The list of filmmakers included, but wasn’t limited to, John Musker and Ron Clements (The Little Mermaid, Hercules, Aladdin, Treasure Planet, Moana), Brenda Chapman (Brave, The Prince of Egypt, Come Away), Kirk Wise (Beauty and the Beast,The Hunchback of Notre Dame), Mike Mitchell (Shrek Forever After, Trolls, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, Kung Fu Panda 4), and more.

Winter – Pete Doctor’s CalArts film about a kid who wants to go outside in the snow was a very cute short film with the funniest ending.

A Birthday – Brenda Chapman’s film had me in my feelings. A story about an older woman celebrating her birthday but flashing

Frannies Christmas – Mike Mitchell’s film was my favorite of the bunch, a twisted take on Frankenstein via a sister and a brother who are informed that Santa Claus isn’t real and set about rectifying that. Such a genius take on a fairytale.

Little Darlin – John Musker’s 1977 student film was so interesting to witness considering that a bit over a decade later he’d kick off Disney’s renaissance. Two dudes are essentially beefing over a girl, chaos ensues.

Phases – The final film I got to see was from Henry Sellick and it is a direct line to what his filmography would be. A bit twisted and a bit stop motion (even though it’s not!), it was a really great way to end off my panel attendance.
