Well friends, the Oscar nominations have been announced and they are quite the bag. Not mixed, not over or underwhelming, just a bag. Many of the expected films were here, but there were some interesting surprises.

The Good

  • Sinners getting 16 nominations is truly incredible. That type of tally is normally reserved for the big period piece drama that we think will be Oscar bait, so for this original Black horror movie to get this kind of reception is spectacular. SO GLAD that Delroy Lindo got nominated.
  • Best Actor is the most interesting it’s been in a while in terms of performances and types of movies.
  • You can always count on the writing branch to give you something interesting. It was Just an Accident making it here is great!

The Bad

  • Tessa Thompson missing out on Best Actress made me very sad.
  • I didn’t care for Train Dreams much and so seeing it in Picture is quite a sight.
  • Less of a bad, and more of an I’m confused…how is Marty Supreme an original screenplay when the director has mentioned that he was inspired by an actual book he read? Is it because he didn’t option it?
  • Avatar: Fire and Ash in Costume Design…lets be more serious Academy….
  • We need a Diane Warren nomination moratorium until she’s got a song worth winning for or one the Academy will give her an Oscar for. ENOUGH.

The Ugly

  • This is less of an ugly and more of I’ve got my eye on it, is the Best Casting Oscar. All of the films are worthy nominees and they are also all nominated for Best Picture. As with any category, you hope that those voting on it are voting for the best but this is one of the few categories that could so easily get lazy.
