Well the Oscars are in the books, with The King’s Speech being crowned as the top film of 2010. Here are my thoughts on the ceremony.
The Good
1. The acting wins. Though I would have loved for an upset to occur, all of the nominees who won here were deserving.
2. The set design. I loved everything about the sets at the oscars. From those LCD light screens that changed according to the movies (LOVED the Gone With the Wind animation) to the moving statues, it was gorgeous.
3. Anne Hathaway. I loved her energy and how she just went for it, regardless of how grating it might be to other people. Plus she kept James Franco from totally ruining the ceremony, that counts for something.
The Bad
1. The King’s Speech winning Best Picture. Though I picked it in my Oscar pool, I actually hate that it won. In a year of such daring and artistic movies, the Academy picked this one? Over The Social Network, Black Swan, The Fighter, even Toy Story 3?
2. James Franco. He was TERRIBLE as the co-host. Not funny, detached, probably high or drunk, and just not right for this hosting gig. Katey from Cinemablend put it best (http://www.cinemablend.com/new/How-James-Franco-s-Hosting-Ruined-The-Oscars-23388.html)
3. Kirk Douglas. While his initial shtick was funny, the longer he drug out announcing the award for Supporting Actress, the less funny he became.
The Ugly
1. Tom Hooper winning for Best Director. My initial tweet said FUCK. THIS. BULL. SHIT. and I still feel that way. He didn’t deserve this Oscar AT ALL. Fincher or Aaronofsky would have made for better choices. The Academy missed its opportunity to reward two auteurs instead giving the award to someone who directed an “oscar” film.
2. My picks. I went 14/25 this year, just terrible.
3. James Franco in drag. Like…what was the point of this? It was so awkward and unnecessary.
