Yes, No, Maybe So: The Dark Knight Rises

Borrowing a page from my favorite film blogger, I’ve decided to take a look at some of the recent trailers. Let’s start with the final film in Christopher Nolan’s take on Batman, the Dark Knight Rises.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GokKUqLcvD8]

Yes
-That football game sequence of the field blowing up. Those affects look amazing
-The supporting cast: Joseph Gordon Levitt! Marion Cotillard!
-That sound editing, especially with Hans Zimmer’s score and the chanting, amazing
-The flying batpod is super cool

No
-Tom Hardy’s voice. Heaven help us if that’s how it will sound during the film cause NO ONE will be able to understand what he is saying
-Anne’s introduction. They should stay away from direct comparisons to other Catwomen
-this trailer seems to hint at political overtones in the film…which was what doomed the last 30 mins of The Dark Knight
-the trailer is kind of an amalgamation of weirdly put together scenes and introductions, it’s kind of jumbled

Maybe So
-Nolan tends to know what he’s doing, so maybe the pensiveness of this trailer is purposeful.
-Bruce Wayne is looking a little tired, maybe they have some big surprise in store?

Even though I am a definite yes on the movie, this trailer isn’t the best I’ve seen from Nolan and Co. Everything about The Dark Knight advertising was fantastic, but this is like a downgrade. What say you?

This is probably the 2nd best trailer out of all the trailers from this franchise, in my opinion, and that reasoning is because of the characters more so than the story. The top 2 grossing Batman films of all time have the Joker in them. Coincidence? Not really. No one else is going to match the intensity and curiosity that the Joker would, and this is sadly becase Heath Ledger died – which I think is indirectly responsible for them fast-forwarding the story 8 years because there was no hint of Bane in the last film.Tom Hardy's voice is his voice. I'm sure they're going to do a little bit of something to it, but I don't mind it. Granted, I saw it online as opposed to the movie theatre, where you can't rewind, but still – as you get used to the voice going along, it'll be easier to decipher. Much Ado About Nothing here….Anne's introduction (and much more, what seems like her character basis) is entirely different than any other Catwoman that has come before. No other Catwoman has had the overtone of a freedom fighter like Anne's Catwoman does, which is on display in Batman's Knightfall story arc arond 1993-1994, a story arc which also involves…..Bane. I can see a LITTLE of what you're getting at as far as visual comparison, but even then you need certain motifs to capture that this is in fact Catwoman. What's more, the "introduction" you speak of might not be her true introduction into the film – that's just the first time you're seeing her in the trailer; that could be the 3rd or 4th time Bruce meets her in the film.Early in the Batman mythos, there were a lot of political overtones, corrupt cops, etc…..Batman is a superhero borne out of political chaos in Gotham itself. To completely ignore the political aspect of how Batman, and likewise Gotham, develops is to pick and choose what aspects of "realism" you support Nolan using in these films. I accept the political ramifications of what Batman does — Batman has never worked in a vacuum, and the consequences of his actions usually never happen in a vacuum — to see the consequences of his actions play out on a scale bigger than just himself is the payoff, not the burden. In short, do you think if everything in Gotham was honky-dory and every bad person got locked up, Batman would still exist? I don't think so. And I don't like the flying Batpod….it's too fantastical at first sight….go figure 😛
